Riding without a helmet is suicide in all circumstances.. Can not believe this is still doubted.I often look to US motorcycle TV like American Chopper, but I am always wondering seeing bikers drive without a helmet. Firms like HD should promote helmets as driving without kills customers...

Really have my qualms about how it's being handled. STATES that have a helmet law should abide. The few in this City with their out to get you one way or another decide what should and shouldn't be absurd. NOW, what should be against the law is driving and talking on cell phone.

Actually in this tourist area the vehicles drivers are the most dangerous around.

"The city is implementing a multipronged funding method, taking out loans, levying assessments on all commercial properties within the municipal improvement district and setting aside a certain percentage of property tax revenue in a tax-increment-financing district to repay debt it will issue when the bond market loosens up."

Oh here comes another Tax Hike MB.

How do you like the bikers now.

I see a bond market getting loose any day now.

5.9 MILLION riders don't have an injurious or any wreck every year. 100,000 do..... 5000 Die. I would say the chances of even getting into a wreck is pretty darn rare. Especially if you don;t take risks, take deep knee draggin leans into blind corners, accelerate through yellow lights, bar hop and take your right of way rather then allowing it to be yielded yo you.

Most riders by a huge margin go through their entire
lives without a wreck. Imagine that...LOL.
Most are aware of their surroundings, blind drives, left turners, Some may wear bright Hawaian shirts which can be seen easier than a black leather jacket.

Helmets only save lives 37% of the time even if you have a severe get off. Those 5000 riders who die each year? Most of them wore helmets. Many of them were alcohol related or the rider was testing his or his bikes limits....and found them.

35 years here and no get offs. If you think you may have a get off...DON'T RIDE...becasue the first rule of riding is you go where you look..

I hate to burst the bubble of those above but if you
lood at what has happened since the state of Pennsylvania changed its mandatory helmet laws to
optional helmet law, deaths in motorcycle accidents
have increase 7 TIMES in the pas few years. While it
is true that a helmets cannot save all riders, it is absurd to deny that your chance of surviving a
accident greatly increases while wearing a DOT approved helmet(not one of those plastic beany's)

Why vote, very interesting in what you have to say, but not everyone sees it that same way. Statistically those are the same odds by coming in contact with the wrong end of a firearm. In a nutshell when it's time it's time.

EVERY rider starts out every year with a less than 2% chance of having any reported wreck. NOw chip of 1% for those who are responsible for their own wrecks, inattentive riders, High risk riding (ala Deals Gap), lane splitting, alcohol, thrill riding through corners,Riders who believe they have the right of way ever, riders who accelerate through yellow lights when they know they could stop safely....

Now their higher chances severely reduce mine even more as I have for 35 years never had any of those issue nor do I test mine of my bikes limits "just in case" or for cheap thrills. Add a headlight modualtor to the pot, no black leathers, only bright shirts and chip a few more tenths.....

No matter how you slice it, 5000 riders will die each year. Thats a real stationarity. Hardly sobering considering 6 MILLION riders. If you really believe its not if but when you go tits up....You should not be riding at all. You will go where you look.

My helmet/shield saved my face and probably my life when a mechanical error caused by an inattentive mechanic missed tightening a front suspension part causing a failure and an unexpected and unanticipated (to say the least) high sider. Landed on my face and chest but no serious injuries - my speed at the time of the failure was under 50 mph. So I'll keep wearing my helmet/shield (40+ yrs) and keep looking pretty rather than a scrambled egg vegetable face. That's my choice and I'm happy to say it doesn't affect my freedoms!

Why_Vote your rant hardly holds water! If as you
say a certain fatality rate is unavoidable, how do
you explain a 7 Times increase in deaths? I have
been riding for many years, but had one near escape with serious injury or death because of my trusty Bell helmet. Just like Michael, I have since that time made sure my Bell was on my head when on my bike. All those fool money grubbers at myrtle beach are only interested in attracting your dollars, they could care less if you get killed when one of them runs you over while turning left with a cell phone stuck in their ear.

North Carolina has a helmet law.South Carolina does not have a helmet law. NC and SC motorcycle deaths per 1000 motorcycles are basically the SAME.

Plus you have to remember 300,000 riders have been coming into SC every year and ride from party to party bar to bat for three weeks!! Still no statistics to reveal the need for a helmet law...

I think Helmet makers have some major state lobbiests..Then again here is SC there are few restrictions on motorcycles and their riders.

Perhaps here in the northeast with our crowded roads
and hectic pace of life, and increase population
density our roads are more dangerous. I know for
a fact that New Jersey has dramatically lower fatality rate for riders than Penn. I would never
support repeal of these laws and would actively work
against any politician who tried

I am against the helmet law but I will have to say it does save lives. Just like the seat belt law. But that is not the problem. Myrtle Beach wants rid of all the bikers and this is the problem. They have run off the Shriners now working on the bikers and other orginizations that visit Myrtle Beach. These visits are made in the off season when business is down. To make up the difference they will raise your taxes. But the bikers are really up in arms and have decided to boycott Myrtle Beach from all there visits and spending for anything with in the city limits. We are staying outside the city limits and not spending a dine in Myrtle Beach. Not all bikers attend the bike ralleys but they do bring there families to Myrtle Beach other times of the year for family vacations to golf trips. You want us out we will stay out and must keep raising your taxes to make up the difference. A lot will loose there jobs and a lot of businesses will close from what the city is doing. Be prepared its going to get worse next year.

Thats right Not a Dine in 09 in Myrtle Beach. The message sure has hit the biker magazines and blogs and seems to be working. The town looks dead from South end to the North end. Rates have droped to under $30 a night and one has a monthly rate of $425. Looks like there hurting to me. Raise those taxes. Thats what they want to do to make up the difference.
