SC Helmet Law: Here We Go Again

There are 16 comments on the FITSNews story from Dec 26, 2011, titled SC Helmet Law: Here We Go Again. In it, FITSNews reports that:

Rather than passing tax cuts, spending caps, real parental choice legislation and meaningful government restructuring, South Carolina lawmakers are once again poised to approve a bunch of kneejerk laws designed to "protect us from ourselves" when they reconvene in Columbia, S.C. next month.

Helmet laws reduce motorcycle ridership, and that costs taxpayers money, a lot of money.

Common sense would seem to dictate that of riders did not wear helmets than more riders would be killed, causing fatality rates to increase. This, however, is not exactly true according to recent evidence.
States with no helmet laws actually have a fatality rate lower than that of states with mandatory helmet laws.
There are several reasons for this. Firstly, states with voluntary helmet laws as a whole have better rider education programs and better-prepared riders. This education leads to better decisions made by the riders that in turn, reduce accidents and fatalities. The second reason for this fact is the increased number of registrations translated to more bikes on the road. There are in fact more fatalities as a whole, but when compared to the number of registrations, the fatalities per rider are actually less.

~~~
In my state of Maryland, the death rate compared to accident rate in motorcycle accidents increased after the mandatory law went into effect.
That means more riders involved in motorcycle accidents died after they made helmets mandatory.
I think they should make wearing football helmets optional. some of my players look pretty stupid in helmets and, God help us, those fellows from Clemp-sun look dumber than they really are in helmets.
If they are going to repeal the helmet laws for motorcycle riders they should just as well reapel the one for football helmets, Same thing---right?
If a motorcycle guy doesn't want to wear a helmet because he thinks it violates his freedoms then a football guy might think the same thing.
It would be no different if a motorcyclist crushes his skull on the asphalt and spreads his brains down 70 feet of I-95 and a football player gets his brains squeezed out by a big time head hit on the field at North Myrtle Beach high School.
Don't stop with just repealing motorcycle helmet laws LET'S REPEAL ALL HELMET LAWS
I agree with Spurrier. Let's make wearing any kind of helmet optional. Hellfire, I used to ride my bike as a kid without a helmet and I turned out ok. Nowadays all the helmet companies are making a killing selling helmets for scooters, bicycles, tricycles, big wheels, and everything imaginable.
I never saw the need for all of these helmets. Back in the day baseball players didn't wear batting helmets, catchers didn't wear helmets. Now they all do. Totally unneeded. it's all just so the equipment makers can sell those damn helmets. Do away with the helmets and a .250 hitter becomes a .300 hitter and wins the MVP award.
Same for football. Back in the day real men didn't wear helmets and there were no faceguards. If you saw the movie Leatherheads you know it was true. Those were some tough SOBs. My boys at Clemson are tough. We don't need no stinkin helmet.
Let's do away with manditory helmets of all kinds, bicycle, tricycle, skateboard, rollerblade and motorcycle. If you want one-strap it on. If you are a real man you don't need no stinkin helmet.
At Clemson we don't need no stinkin helmet!
No, your sport helmet non-sense isn't the same. As a matter of course, motorcycle riding does not involve hitting things with your head.
Helmets are to prevent major injury in the worst case scenarios. If you chose to not wear a helmet, you are doing so with the knowledge that should you need it, you won't have it, and you accept the consequences. Should we really have a law to prevent these people from removing themselves from the gene pool?
In 'worst case scenarios' helmets do no good, just as in worst care scenario car accidents, seat belts do no good.
Statistically most people killed in motorcycle accidnts were wearing helmets. It is just a matter of numbers.
Helmets are not for the common spills, not for the worst case scenarios, but for the ones in between.
As I said in my previous post:
In my state of Maryland, the death rate compared to accident rate in motorcycle accidents increased after the mandatory law went into effect.
That means more riders involved in motorcycle accidents died after they made helmets mandatory.
Statistically, you were 'safer'(less likely to die) when helmets were voluntary.
Hey, lets admit to the logical extension of that thinking.
The ones without helmets are said to probably not survive.
That is the propaganda I read.
No helmet - you will die.
wear a helmet - and you will survive.
It is the ones with helmets who are veggies, or otherwise incapacitated.
Not so fast... Yeap not helmet better chance of not getting another chance. My wife has worked with mc accident victims and more of those with helmets were rehab-able than the ones without.
Yes, more of those with helmet were rehabilatated.
Yes, more of those with helmets received extensive treatment, that cost a lot of money.
What happened to the ones with no helmets?
How soon were they buried?
How much did their funerals cost you?
Yes, you made my point for me.
Like I posted earlier survival of the fittest. If you are dumb enough to ride without one, the gene pool gets a little deeper. If are dumb enough to wear one, you make the gene pool shallower.
