Both Escobar and Gonzalez are fine defensive shortstops. Both have similar lifetime slugging percentages. Escobar is having an off year at the bat. Gonzalez has been hot as a hitter and is having one of his best seasons ever. The Braves are in the thick of a division race. The Blue Jays appear to be falling out of contention after a promising start. Gonzalez
This trade gives on paper, a short term offensive boost to the Braves who are in a strong position to make the post season. The Blue Jays get a younger player who could benefit from a change in scenery and possibly regain the hitting stroke he displayed in past years. Short term, the trade seems to favor Atlanta. Long term may favor the Blue Jays.
