Has the advent of cutters, sliders, etc stopped the need for spit balls or is it just not worth the risk of getting caught? Was there any way to estimate pitching speed before the clock? I don't suppose an underhand fastball could hit the 90's, though it was probably easier to pitch a complete game that way.

This is such a sad story. Especially the fact that he was hoping to retire to spend more time with his family.

I know, it really is... However, it seems a little rididulous how much time it took the MLB to make the use of helmets obligatory! Did people have to die to make them realize being in the aim of a super fast ball without protection was incredibly dangerous?
