Chicago White Sox give little help to Jose Contreras in 4-3 loss

Full story: Chicago Tribune

The White Sox were held to four hits Friday night, a shortcoming that loomed even larger because of their inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Let's see, the Sox just lost to one of the National League's worst teams who are in the middle of a slump where they just lost 5 of 7 and are missing their two best players. The Sox just went through the easiest part of their schedule and were humiliated by 4 teams who came in slumping and they are now 13-17 in their last 30 against these bottom feeders and are 5 games under .500 for the year. For this team to have had a realistic chance this year they needed to be about 8 to 10 games over .500 at this point in the schedule because their primary competition has already played the hard part of their schedule and the tough part is on its way for the Sox. The sox have a 22 game chunk of their schedule coming up where they play 16 of 22 on the road against Boston4, NY3, Minn3 on the road and then play at home against Boston 4 and Oak 2, then they get to go on a West Coast trip for the LAA 3 and the Mariners.
If this team can't beat up on the teams from the NL Central who were playing their worst ball of the year when they met up with Sox or any of the other teams they have met during the last 30 games who make up the easiest portion of their schedule, how would anyone expect them to do anything when the schedule gets tough?
This is a very poorly constructed team and to expect anything other than what they have delivered so far is not realistic, it almost definitely will get much worse for them very soon.
So if you are Kenny, are you a buyer or a seller? I know there is very little they can sell at this point, but it is still better than Kenny dumping everything that's left on the farm for another Griffey so they might pick up another 2 games. The biggest problem this team has is that its GM put this mess together and rather than admit his mistake, he very well may mortgage the next few years for a run at nothing.

You're probably right on, KW. And I saw visions of the old Jose last night. He was not effective as he was his last two games. 4th inning on, he could not hit his spots and they started teeing off on him. That was the Reds hitters. He won't get away with that when we go back to AL play.

Congratulations, Christ Getz on your 1st major league home run.

As disapointed as I am with this team at this moment, I am not throwing in the towel. All you have to do is see how lousy the Indians relief staff is to see anyone in our division still has a shot.

As far as how tough our schedule is. Why don't we wait and see what kind of song your singing if they come through that stretch in good shape. You've been a doomsayer your entire career on this board and even had to post this little rant 3 times (twice on the Linebrink article) so I never really read your message, just notice your intentions.

There is no reason to get bent out of shape about this team. It is playing exactly as it was constructed to play and there have been no surprises as far as I am concerned. It is a mixture of past their prime veterans and unproven players which results in up and down play.

When KW didn’t make a move for the low hanging fruit like Orlando Hudson or Randy Wolf in the off-season I figured no problem lets get a real rebuilding project in place and contend in 2010 or 2011. This team is not going to go on a run like the Twins did in the early 90’s and win 15 in a row after the break or close the season the way the Rockies did a couple of years ago on the way to the World Series. Once the other GM’s get itchy trigger fingers its time for KW to sell what he can but my fear is that instead of trading players like Dye, Dotel or Thome for prospects he will end up doing something stupid like trading Poreda, Danks or Beckham for somebody like Brian Roberts.

The Cubs come back from a 5-1 deficit to beat the Sox, then a 7 run deficit to beat Cleveland, while the Sox start their nosedive to the basement prompted by Ozzie's poor decision making of Linebrink and Thornton.
It appeared to me Contreras ran out of gas and Ozzie was outmanaged by Dusty, a first for Dusty in any ballpark!

KW Fan contends that "[t]his is a very poorly constructed team". I'll counter that the core of this team won a championship four seasons ago. Did you forget about that already? What the Sox have is a aging team that is just starting to mix in some younger players. The next three weeks will determine if the Sox are going to be buyers or sellers. I don't see the Sox going anywhere and I think that they are going to be sellers. Check out the talent at double-A Birmingham. That also might help determine if the Sox are going to be sellers.

Is your point that you equate your self worth by the winnings and losings of the major league sports team you root for? Teams made up of multi-millionaires that wouldn't p.i.s.s on you if you were on fire. Good luck with that.

The first part of the post is dead on. The way they are playing, these guys aren't going to get far at all.

However, it is nice to watch a younger team. Guys like Beckham, Ramirez (for shortstop), and Getz are getting their major league experience now, and they could be tougher later. Even Anderson can hopefully continue to improve.

Hey! Lou, I just read Buttfuko's long yakking post and it was excellent, he told us everything we already knew, and he used some great words and phrases like "primary condition" and "realistic" "biggest problem", and never used "nursing home", "diaper", "morphine drip" "idiot" or "pathetic" even once.
"That's great, Dragon, that boy is learning, but I didn't know you spoke "chimpanzee", now pop me another Bud Lite".

The veteran core of this team is continually injured.Konerko has a bad thumb for two seasons now,Dye continues to have calf problems,Thorme has periodic back problems. All three are on the down side of their careers. As much as I like all three, there is a time, for the good of the team,to say thank you and good-bye.I notice Maggs in Detroit is in the same situation.

So, Fields, Anderson and Owens have pretty much nothing to do with their own hitting woes?
