I seem to have met a fair share of folks who are easily scamming Uncle Sam and our hard earned tax dollars. Claiming to be disabled, they are getting up to a $1,000 check per month because they claim they are too "sick" to work and receive social security disability. The ones I know are able to get SSDI as they have claimed reasons of mental disease, depression, bipolar, alcoholism, drug addiction YET these folks I know ARE able to roof a house, rewire an entire business, participate in 150 mile bike rides, spent countless hours working out at a health club, do free lance consulting work for $80 per hour - all under the radar of our wonderful federal government so they can continue to collect their checks. I also know vets who are having trouble claiming SSDI because of the bureacratic nightmare, these are guys who have fought for our military and they are DENIED their benefits. So where is the fairness Why are these scammers so easily able to get a free check (for about 7 years - that is how long they usually go before they check in again with someone who receives it) while the feds tell the rest of us poor working stiffs that there might not be enough social security left for us when we retire in 2025? This is a bigger problem than any welfare problem faced by Milwaukee in the old days. This problem is deep and broad and runs from one side of the country to the other.
I'd like to know if others out there are aware of people claiming to be "too sick to work" but are clearly able to do lots of strenuous physical and mental activities, and freelance work, while they collect a check.

Hah!...why be so worried about social security scammers? They gotta make a living, too. Besides, the way the government is handling social security, you wont be getting it when you're old enough anyway. You see, in Zoology class, they told us about a little thing called "hyperparasitism," or the survival strategy of a group of organisms which is to feed off a host whom itself is feeding off another host. In [this] racket, however, you work like a fool all your life, while the feds tax your earnings, theoretically, for yourself. But you just get stiffed because social security doesn't keep up with inflation. And the upside-down pyramidal structure of our population growth cannot logically sustain sufficient revenue to support growing numbers of ever longer lived seniors. Don't get me wrong. I am a liberal in favor of social security, in theory. But social security only exist there. So it is what it is, and it sure isn't social security. I'd rather see the governemnt end the program then pervert it they way they do, raiding the funds and replacing them with worthless promissary notes. Now if that aint the work of the Devil. Of course, I don't believe in the Devil, just greedy, doctrinaires.

You make some great points Geno. Great Points. But still it angers me to see my neighbor roofing his house, driving his brand new convertible (paid for with cash) and the family take a spring break trip to Florida while he boasts about his freelance computer consulting business (which is valid - I see professional looking people all the time going in and out of his home office) AND laughs about the $960 check he gets every month from Uncle Sam for his "bipolar disorder." It's a free check every month for 5 to 7 years - he got a disability benefits lawyer to get the SSDI finally, after he was turned down four times. The public benefit lawyers then get a take on the "back pay" the recipient can get if they can prove they were "sick" for a year or two back. It's such a complete scam and I don't know why more people are not outraged or the media is not t investigating all these people on the public trough who are VERY capable of working, but refuse to.

Geno - you are a difficult one to read. Do I detect sarcasm in your voice? Is it that you are pleased that there are MANY people across the country who are riding to the bank on the tails of your tax money? And nobody is doing a thing about it? Does everyone realize that these folks are also going to be getting the federal "stimulus" check from Bush's administration even though they haven't paid taxes, worked one honest day in years or done anything else but suck off the the SS nipple? I have no problem with those who REALLY need SSDI - bless em all - but there are so many scamming the system right now and our legislators don't seem to care, the SS Adm. doesn't seem to care and most sad of all, the public doesn't seem to care.

I have a neighbor like that. He claims that he is disabled (bad back & an alcohol problem). He spends most of his day in the summer doing yard work, cutting grass, and gardening. My father (it is hard for me to call him that) is another great example. He decided that it would be great to drink his life away. He is now considered disabled and is receiving SS. Oh, I forgot to mention that he owes 60k + in child support.

Now on the opposite end of the spectrum, my mother has rheumatoid arthritis. It is in an advanced state, but since she stayed home to take care of my brothers instead of working, she does not qualify for social security. Before my brothers, she had worked for 20 years. She had taken 10 years off, but has since come down with RA. Yes my step father works, but it is not enough to cover the medical bills along with the medication.

The system is shit.

I know more than a few people on SSI and and they are NOT scammers and barely eek out an existence on $1,000 a month.

I also know you can turn the scammers in. That's what I've done.

Yes! The system is not set up to truly help those who really need it - it seems to be in place mostly to help those who can figure out how to scam it. I would urge everybody who reads this, who believes they know someone in the Milwaukee area scamming social security out of disability checks, to report them and copy our local media - investigative reporters at the local tv stations who are willing to dig into this stuff. Wind, there are many out there who really should be getting it but are not, and that is why it makes me so angry to know about these other folks who are LAUGHING all the way to the direct deposit into their bank account. My wife knows a guy who collects SSDI, refuses to pay child support, and during the last few years, went to school and got his degree, made the dean's list and now sits at home doing under the table computer consulting (this is not our neighbor but ANOTHER guy)He told her he makes about $80,000 a year that he is squirreling away with the help of a relative, so the IRS, courts and others don't find it. And he is just waiting until his kids are 18 so he does not have to pay any support - why he can't work - he's too sick according to our SS administration! As a father, and a husband and a taxpayer this really pisses me off.

No, I don't like it that people defraud Social Security. I have a developmentally disabled family member who needs the monthly payments, but he works too, part-time and lawfully, to supplement his income. May all scammers go to jail. Any clearer?

Hi Geno. Yes that is clear. And I completely agree. I too see guys like your relative working their tails off, and happy to do so, packing groceries at the store and working other jobs to contribute and earn their way while these scammers sit back and do nothing. Applause to your relative and all those around him who have supported his efforts.

Get her to a better doctor who knows how to spell. He'll fill out the claim properly and get your mother the SSDI to which it sounds like she's properly entitled. Don't give up.

Get your mom a decent doctor who can spell. They will fill out the paperwork properly and she'll get the SSDI she's entitled to. Good Luck!

most of these people who comnplain here have the attitude that if people can't work, then by god they have a responsibility to live as though their poor!! you people are freaks.i've been diagnosed as bipolar since the latter 70's. i have a sleep disorder that prevents me from working..if i even have something as slight as a luncheon date i won't sleep the night previous..either off and on or not at all.extreme case of insomnia caused by my body not supplying the chemical that enables sleep.it's a long story but NOT an uncommon one//but being on my meds for all the while i've been diagnosed,i remain stable.i'm not poor by any means however. because of family helping and also giving me gifts on a yearly basis(christmas and birthdays) i almost always have updated audio and video equipment as well as the fact i drive a 2000 mazda protoge and not to mention i own like 3 tv's ,have high speed cable,etc..i live in an apartment complex that sits right beside the lake.i'm self educated in psychology and source code(xtml).but..i can't work..unemployable..i sit up all night watching showtime or encore,etc..again i'm unemployable.. i receive approximately $750 per month in disability.-alot of people i talk to make it clear that they hate my guts because they say i'm 'using' the government and that there's nothing wrong with me.bottom line is,if i lived as though i were poor and living in poverty, they wouldn't have a complaint..in psychological terms, this is called...jealousy!..and many of course have the attitude that if you have two legs and two arms then you can work..talk about ignorance! honestly..i'm glad i don't have to work..cause i tried for 8 years can't..i enjoy the fact that i can do whatever i want at anytime i want.but it sure makes people angry when people like me admit they enjoy being free from the daily 9 to 5. i found a long time ago that people who complain about disabled people who can't work are merely jealous.more than half of the people i meet really believe that i can work simply because i'm intelligent and have the full use of my limbs.their ignorant plain and simple,..i've even explained to these morons about bipolarity and sleep disorders and even told them of url's to check out what it's all about.they continue to hold on to their opinions..sad and ignorant.i also can do certain things outside like working on things here and there.that doesn't mean that i'm able to hold a job of any kind..sounds like some of you are of that attitude that if ya got working limbs then you can work..sounds like somebody needs to study a bit more to understand just why physical appearances are most often deceiving.

Go to youtube & search FatboyDan. He claims a mental disabillity, yet he can do anything anyone else can (and more than some). He drives, hunts (which means he posses weapons) and fishes. He has no problems speaking. He is an OBVIOUS scammer who needs to be sued for fraud! Go see for yourselves, and if someone knows how, report him. It's unfair to those in need for someone too lazy to work to be able to get a free pass.

My ex quit his job 5 months after we started divorce in 1999. He owes $11,000 in back alimony and got child support to $0 becasue he didn't work. Now I find out that he has been getting SSDI for the last 5 years even though he has been in jail twice. He filed for benenfits for our daughter and kept the money that was to go to my daughter for himself. I am turning him in and I hope it violates his prbation and he rots in jail!!!!!

I am also a person who is disabled,I suffer from Lupus,Rheumatoid Arthritis,Sarcoidosis along with Fibromaligia,it truly sucks to be in my shoes.I am only 42 yrs old I have worked every since i was 16yrs old yet I had been living with these disabilities.Never did i want to stop working nor did I want to sit on my butt but I had no choice. The more I tired to push myself the worst it got for my health,im now on SSDI it nothing compared to working the money isn,t enough to make it on but I do appreciate being able to recieve it.I am currently working on my own bussiness so that im able to support my family without the use of the goverment funds.I am sickened by the people who pretend and play as if they are sick or disabled there are people like myself and countless others that truly need the assistance.I never understood how a person is elgible just because they are a drunk or a crackhead how does that work??Well as you all may see its definitley a screw up in the system somewhere and then when people like me need the help we have to go through the ringer just to get the assistance we need.Good Luck for the people who are trying to get help, and for the people who aren,t entitled it your day will come when it all ends. Please people think there is always a better way try opening up your own small bussiness or even starting something within your family atleast when you aren,t able to help out you won,t miss out nor can you be fired..
