Understandable. Men in the military still hold the upper-hand when it comes to advancement. Do I agree with her change? No. In my opinion, being female is and always will be the 'better-half' of creation.

You know how gays are born this way? Well we are born this way too. We don't just wake up one morning and say "I want to change my gender. For many of us, we figure out we are trans pretty early in life. I wished I was a boy from about the age of five. I just didn't have the vocabulary for it. It took me until I was in my 40's before I figured out I could actually be a man. That was when I started being comfortable in my own skin. My life is infinitely better because I no longer have to hide who I am. Coming out of that closet was the best thing I could do for myself.

This man wants to be able to align his body with his gender. That is why many of us go on testosterone and get surgery. Doing that doesn't make us men. There are many trans people who either choose not to go the hormone/surgery route or can't for financial or medical reasons. What makes us men is our right to self-identify as one. And we have always been men and it just took us a while to figure it out.

And a nitpick. The proper pronoun to use is he and him. The GLAAD Media Guide has a whole section on property terminology for covering trans stories. And it is transgender. Not transgendered.

I'd also like to note that this guy may very well get kicked out. DADT repeal did not extend to us. He is trying to put into motion the right for us to be able to serve too.

Also, we would never change our gender just to get ahead in our careers. Usually what happens when we come out is we get fired.

I do agree with both your replies. I apologize if I offended. I am who I am;as my Avatar indicates.
