I certainly understand that this was a tragedy for the young airman and her family, and my prayers are with them. What I do not understand at this point is how this case warranted a high level felony charge against Mr. Hart. There must be aggravating circumstances that have not been reported in the news. Was he a drunk driver? Was this a road rage case? If not, it sounds like there but for the grace of God go all of us. Simple negligence, or even the commission of a minor traffic offense, should not lead to criminal charges based solely on the gravity of unintended consequences. Unless there is more to the story, this is a tragedy for the young lady's family and a travesty of a case brought by the prosecutor.

I do understand a life was taken, but lets remember the man ran a "red light" it was truly an accident. He did not go out with the intention to kill or hurt any one, unless there is more to this story. I just dont understand how he was given 4 years in prison and cant drive a vehicle for the next 25 years! 4 years in a state prison full of predators and criminals and the family is happy he is off the streets. I lost my brother in a car accident, it's hard even till this day he was 29 years old - it's hard but we moved on and although we wish he was here there is just nothing we can do. For this man to "plea" to 4 years in prison just shows how good of a person he truly is, he felt guilty - however his lawyer and or public offender should of worked out a much better deal for him, he would of made a great impact going to schools and talking to kids about the importance to drive safely, instead they sent him up the river to a state prison where his life we more than likely be altered forever. The man should appeal his case, considering a local driver hurt 10 people in a bus carrying special needs people and 4 of them died in the accident and guess what his sentence will be less than 1 year. I do feel truly sorry for the family of the driver who was killed but at the end of the day it was still an accident! Very sad story...

Thank you to the both of you for your words. I do as well feel bad for their families loss, but I agree, the punishment was to harsh. Nick is my cousin, and a good guy. Your right, there is no way he had any intent. Matter of fact, his girlfriend found out she was pregnant right before he went to prison and now he will miss a lot of his son growing up. People make mistakes and I know he feels horrible for what happened. I just wish his punishment wasn't so harsh. See you 07/2014 Nick! We love and miss you!
