Women can't even protect themselves from fellow troops and have allowed other women to be raped and sexually assaulted for decades. For what, the chance to kill people.
Fix the problem of rape and sexual assault in the military and then worry about combat duty.

I don't respect the military at all for allowing all of the heinous crimes to go on in the ranks. But women aren't even looking out for each other!

I'm currently active duty, infantry. While the above post makes basically no sense, i do have to agree that opening up combat roles to women shouldn't be top priority for the army right now. Sexual harassment/abuse, suicide and domestic abuse are PROBLEMS. We have combat troops fighting and dying in Afghanistan still today with no end in sight. Opening up a can of works like this is going to cause more problems in and on deployments - a lot more.
I've read a lot of news articles with interviews from one or two "veterans" who support women in combat whole heartedly. I'm not sure where they found these guys at but I'll tell you they aren't from around here. Everyone from the lowest privates to senior ncos are already imagining the problems which will caused by this. Imagine a private knocking up his platoon leader, or a 1sg having sex with one of his privates. Not to mention the feminine hygiene issues. I've been to the field from anywhere from 2 weeks to a month with MAYBE one shower. Men don't have a major problem with that, women in combat will. Just my two cents.
