US Marines Posing With "SS" Flag Catch Flak From Former Marines, Auschwitz Survivor

There are 17 comments on the www.dailymail.co.uk story from Feb 9, 2012, titled US Marines Posing With "SS" Flag Catch Flak From Former Marines, Auschwitz Survivor. In it, www.dailymail.co.uk reports that:

Topix Staff Feature

A group of Marine scout snipers in Afghanistan seen posing with a flag bearing a symbol similar to that used by the Nazis are taking heat from former Marines, at least one Auschwitz survivor, and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, a D.C. based group tasked with safeguarding the exercise of religious expression for members of the armed forces. According to CBS News:

Master Gunnery Sgt. Mark Oliva, a spokesman at Camp Pendleton, Calif., said the photo was brought to the attention of the 1 Marine Expeditionary Force inspector general in November, and he found there was no intent on the part of the Marines to identify themselves with a racist organization.

The use of the back-to-back S's on the flag was meant to stand for "Scout Sniper" according to Oliva, and indeed there can be found a number of scout sniper paraphernalia bearing the lightning bolt style "SS," but it doesn't appear to be common.

As of now, any action taken against the Marines in the photo is unspecified.

Your take: Do you find the flag in the photo to be offensive, insulting, or not worth the media attention?

Not a bit offensive. It was not like the old SS insignia except it used the same letter of the alphabet. These Marines clearly had no intention of conjuring up memories of the Third Reich. The media is making more of this than it deserved. Shall we make it politically incorrect to use two Ss conjoined? It is on the name of every US warship, for instance. Really, lighten up.

... completely agree with this observation. The lightning bolt stylized 's' is not restricted in its use, e.g., the rock band, KISS.

... and it's no surprise to me--or any other rational person--that you and your ilk are so steeped in finding racism everywhere that you'd find it in these heros' innocent graphic used as a symbol of their pride in their team. It was benign until idiots like you said "all lightning bolt s's are unacceptable because one of Hitler's units used them."

This world has become much too damned politically correct--period.

Boy's Town Abuse!
Jan 5, 2011 ... I took it so seriously at the time that I went to Rome and met with Cardinal Ratzinger.... Ratzinger is now in the limelight over this issue, but he couldn't get ... At least certain elements of Boys Town were being improperly used.

Ok, good ! Now India can have its national flag with a swastika on it, being an ancient Hindu symbol and many centuries before the Nazis misused it.

The SS flag is another reason I am proud support Mikey Weinstein at the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. Read about & donate here: http://www.militaryreligiousfreedom.org/about...

The reason these photos are just now hitting the news is because 45 active-duty Marines contacted Mikey Weinstein, president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, because of they were disturbed by the photographs. Thankfully, some Marines had a problem with what they saw.

The photos prompted Weinstein Thursday to send a letter to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. He wrote, among other things:

The implication of these photographs, if true, should be readily apparent. If the use of the Nazi insignia has been, in any way, condoned or tolerated by the Marine Corp.[sic], the implications are abhorrent to everything for which our country is fighting and the constitutional principles for which it stands.

Weinstein also sent a letter to Gen. John Amos, the Marine Corps commandant. In it, he said the Marines involved should be punished: "That flag symbolizes the vile ideology of Hitlerian fascism and sends a menacing signal to religious minorities within the United States armed forces."

No kidding.

He told Adam Weinstein (no relation) at Mother Jones that the Marines may have been reprimanded, moved to new units or given some kind of non-judicial punishment: "That's unacceptable. If this is not a court-martial offense, there are no court-martial offenses."

Some folks no doubt will view this as just funnin' around. Boys being boys. Some folks, like, for instance, the organizers of the Conservative Political Action Conference, who this year invited a white nationalist to address what he views as the plague of diversity in America.

You would think that if anything would get zero tolerance in the American military, it would be the display of Nazi emblems by men in uniform.

“Please understand the term Political Correctness is primarily a propaganda tool to define liberals as intolerant Nazis and to characterize racist, bigots, xenophobes, and chauvinists as mainstream.” Rack Jite- http://rackjite.com

“While Political Correctness concerns administrative reprimands for publicly expressing various forms of bigotry, Conservative Correctness concerns the click of safeties and jail cell doors for saying unpatriotic, irreligious and naughty things.” Rack Jite- http://rackjite.com

Let's just cut to the chase, Mikey Weinstein wants these soldiers heads to roll because he is Jewish, plain and simple. It's a freaking flag for crying out loud, NOT a war crime. The only reason this is getting SO MUCH press is because Jewish people find it offensive, PERIOD!
