Actually Fort Sill is ruining Lawton. Years ago Fort Sill was voted to be one of the most beautiful posts in the nation. Beautiful green spaces and strict environmental protection laws made this the place to be. This all has changed. After B.R.A.C. this post has turned into a giant paved parking lot that holds the heat and probably contributes to the horrendous temperatures we are experiencing this year. Many installations use green building techniques in new construction. Instead of acres of paved parking lots they build park houses with solar panels to power the buildings. It seems Fort Sill is hell bent on environmental destruction. All the gorgeous mature trees have been cut down and constant fires have turned this once beautiful place into a wasteland. The hills now resemble ugly El Paso. Miles of backed up traffic during lunch hour contributes to the lousy air quality and heat. We are in the worst drought since the dust bowl days. All the surrounding communities are on water restriction. Fort Sill still blasts millions of gallons of precious water onto the golf course every day. It makes me sick to see that. I guess playing golf is more important than having drinking water and water for the cattle and horses! Fort Sill also turned the beautiful Medicine Park area into a scorched waste land. The negligent range fire all but destroyed that community and it will never recover to its former beauty. Fort Sill started the fire that destroyed a national monument on the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. Fort Sill Fire Fighters posed laughing in front of the destroyed builidng. I guess the mission comes before safety no matter what the cost. Fort Sill does not care about the surrounding community and the damage they do. It's time to leave this place. Thanks Fort Sill!
