It won't be ever. The DEMS are too chicken to vote on it before the mid-terms and they will loose control then and it won't go anywhere after that. GLBT sold down the river again.

Unfortunately you may be right. I still hold out hope the Dems will at some point grow a spine, but the way things are looking, they're running scared ahead of the 2010 elections. Definitely not promising.

"According to a Washington Post-ABC News poll, three-quarters of Americans say that they support openly gay people serving in the military. The 75 percent figure is far above the 44 percent of Americans who held the same position in May 1993."

You know what's so funny about the poll, just over 1,000 out of 300 million Americans were polled and it is spun as if this is what all of America feels.

I do look forward to when they accurately poll the military members and their families and it is shown that while there are pockets of servicemembers who have no problem with this, the overwhelming majority oppose the integration of those in this lifestyle.

Again, for the slooooow people out there. The military has NEVER run things based on the poll results of the members. If you ever served you would know that. Gee, did that poll me when they wanted to send me overseas for a 3rd tour? Ummmm, NO. Did they poll me when they wanted to draw down the forces and make advancements ever harder? Ummmmm, NO. Did they poll me when they decided to back out on their promise of lifetime healthcare benefits for 20 years of service? Ummmm, NO.

The military changes based on what's best or most cost effective, regardless of how the members may feel. That's the way it works. The military lived with racial integration, women on ships, and DADT; now they will live with the repeal.

With poles showing 75% of Americans agreeing to end DADT I think we may see it rather soon. Even Hard-nose Chaney has finally seen his daughters light. Politicians are as hypocritical as are religious leaders. They run on polls and have no mind of their own, publicly. As for this article, who wrote it? Obviously, whoever, it was a redneck!

Its just a matter of time. Most of you here were probably not even alive when we faced this issue with Black and Japanese in the military. Even Native American's had their share of discomfort.

Once gays are accepted in the military (which is only a matter of time), no doubt they'll be a new boogie man. Maybe Muslims are next to get discriminated in the military.

We'll see.

People will know when the opposition is acting in a deleterious manner. They will be called out for it. We'll have none of the Palin-esque "Now is not the time" disseblers.

Meanwhile we have the right to incremental change. De-funding DADTDP is a start.

First, sir/ma'am, please don't assume that the people who post have not served/are serving in the armed forces. Most who post may not have, but some have/are.

Second, my reaction was to the slantedness of the ABC/WaPo poll of 1,000 people as a representation of all of America. To act like this is the vibe of America is deceptive and extremly inaccurate.

"As part of the internal review, Gates said the military would survey service members and their families on any changes to policies.

"A guiding principle of our efforts will be to minimize disruption and polarization within the ranks, with special attention paid to those serving on the front lines," Gates told a Senate committee this month.

Since I'm not that impressed with the biased polling of ABC/WaPo, I eagerly anticipate the polling of those this will mostly affect, the military family. Their opinion is what matters most to me.

The military personnel don't make decisions by polling, but they do get to vote for their elected officials and there is a mid-term election coming up.

If our elected officials choose this course of action, I believe that the professionalism of our nations finest will prevail over this decision, whether it be right or wrong.

You keep voting democrats into office, at least republicans don't pretend to be your friend to get your vote. Also, why is it they are going to loose?

The fact is the military doesn't want it, the other fact is that Obama has far more straight people to loose over this then gay, and with the trouble he is in he can't afford a single vote. I agree it will not happen.

You don't even want to know. We're constantly made fun of, constantly and endlessly. There are internet memes about it. ALL of what you say is how we're perceived because we're perceived as having no *grasp* on what is *sensible* in terms of morality. I avoid telling people I'm American when in other countries. It's an embarrassment.

Here, I can tell you that you are *factually* wrong. You sound like you've never left your home state.

They *DO NOT* think of America as "having a higher morality." The people the previous poster spoke up think of Americans as *obsessed freaks* who can't get their country together and are constantly fighting and at each other's throats, because this kind of fighting *DOESN'T EXIST* in their countries.

They have problems, yes, but this kind of NATIONWIDE SCREECHING doesn't exist in those countries. It's uniquely American, and it makes the country into an embarrassment. For instance, British politesse *PROHIBITS* it. It *WON'T AND CAN'T* happen there because they wouldn't dare *ACT* like Americans do. In Scandinavian countries, they're much mellower even when they disagree. Only in America is there nonstop screaming and endless lawsuits and people *really, literally trying to force, force, force* others to live by their morality, to *force* the law to become what reflects their morality so that others must live by the same draconian rules, on so endless and hysterical a basis.

Only here.

And it's not admired, no. Good lord, what planet are you on?

I linked an editorial in another thread that suggested pundits are saying *the military is lying* in some way about wanting to implement this.

They're not suggesting some "nefarious plot," but they're saying that it *doesn't make sense* to claim there will be implementation when military "honchos" themselves know *THAT THIS IS NOT HOW TO IMPLEMENT* a policy, not by studying it for a year.

The very nature of the military is that you *issue orders*. You don't pussyfoot around personnel. You *TELL THEM* what will happen.

If anyone else can find the editorial or my link in the other thread, it's very eye-opening. It is strongly implied there that something is *very* suspicious about this, as if someone is lying or misrepresenting what's going on to "assuage" the public or the gay community. I thought so the *second* I heard them say it would take a year to implement. I pictured them crying and shaking as they gave orders. It's not how the military works and people have reason to be gravely suspicious.

A pathetic lie showing how truly out of touch with reality you are. In fact the rest of the world see the US as hypocritical fools who THINK they have a "higher morality" while, in fact, having a lower one. Few nations do LESS to help their needy, very few execute and cage so many of their citizens, with so much racism and class bias in doing so. No other nation on the planet has ever murdered hundreds of thousands with nuclear weapons. No other nation has death squads in neighboring hemispheres to murder thousands suspected of promoting governments that care about the people, not US corporations. What other nation does so much to prevent positive change in the environment? None. What other nation does so much to lecture others about human rights while violating them constantly? None. What other nation tries to use international law to go after their "enemies" while ignoring it when it suits them? None.

You're truly delusional if you think other nations view us as having "higher morality" and anyone who does is all the more delusional.

Get Real--"You keep voting democrats into office, at least republicans don't pretend to be your friend to get your vote."

In fact, for all the problems Democrats are VASTLY superior on gay rights issues.

"Also, why is it they are going to loose?
The fact is the military doesn't want it,"

First off WHO CARES. As has been pointed out before, THEY WORK FOR US. This is not a military dictatorship, and the military doesn't get to just say "We don't want blacks" or "we don't want gays" and go "OH, OK, just do whatever you want." Actually, they already do far more than they should be able to get away with.

Secondly, you're wrong. MANY top military leaders say it's time for this change.

"the other fact is that Obama has far more straight people to loose over this then gay,"

Fortunately most straight people, especially those who voted for Obama, aren't knuckle-dragging bigots like you.

"and with the trouble he is in he can't afford a single vote. I agree it will not happen."

No, you dream it won't happen, and when it does you'll go back to screaming about how socialist these awful liberal (what joke THAT is) Democrats are.

I've traveled all over the world including adopting a daughter from China, the world does not need to "like" us, it needs to "respect" us, and until Obama came to office it did.
