Documents show media plotting to kill stories about Rev. Jeremiah Wright while attacking Palin

By Jonathan Strong - The Daily Caller
Published: 1:15 AM 07/20/2010

It was the moment of greatest peril for then-Sen. Barack Obama’s political career. In the heat of the presidential campaign, videos surfaced of Obama’s pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, angrily denouncing whites, the U.S. government and America itself. Obama had once bragged of his closeness to Wright. Now the black nationalist preacher’s rhetoric was threatening to torpedo Obama’s campaign.

The crisis reached a howling pitch in mid-April, 2008, at an ABC News debate moderated by Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos. Gibson asked Obama why it had taken him so long – nearly a year since Wright’s remarks became public – to dissociate himself from them. Stephanopoulos asked,“Do you think Reverend Wright loves America as much as you do?”

Watching this all at home were members of Journolist, a listserv comprised of several hundred liberal journalists, as well as like-minded professors and activists. The tough questioning from the ABC anchors left many of them outraged.“George [Stephanopoulos],” fumed Richard Kim of the Nation, is “being a disgusting little rat snake.”

Others went further. According to records obtained by The Daily Caller, at several points during the 2008 presidential campaign a group of liberal journalists took radical steps to protect their favored candidate. Employees of news organizations including Time, Politico, the Huffington Post, the Baltimore Sun, the Guardian, Salon and the New Republic participated in outpourings of anger over how Obama had been treated in the media, and in some cases plotted to fix the damage.

In one instance, Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent urged his colleagues to deflect attention from Obama’s relationship with Wright by changing the subject. Pick one of Obama’s conservative critics, Ackerman wrote,“Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists.”

Michael Tomasky, a writer for the Guardian, also tried to rally his fellow members of Journolist:“Listen folks–in my opinion, we all have to do what we can to kill ABC and this idiocy in whatever venues we have. This isn’t about defending Obama. This is about how the [mainstream media] kills any chance of discourse that actually serves the people.”

“Richard Kim got this right above:‘a horrible glimpse of general election press strategy.’ He’s dead on,” Tomasky continued.“We need to throw chairs now, try as hard as we can to get the call next time. Otherwise the questions in October will be exactly like this. This is just a disease.”

(In an interview Monday, Tomasky defended his position, calling the ABC debate an example of shoddy journalism.)

Thomas Schaller, a columnist for the Baltimore Sun as well as a political science professor, upped the ante from there. In a post with the subject header,“why don’t we use the power of this list to do something about the debate?” Schaller proposed coordinating a “smart statement expressing disgust” at the questions Gibson and Stephanopoulos had posed to Obama.

“It would create quite a stir, I bet, and be a warning against future behavior of the sort,” Schaller wrote.

Tomasky approved.“YES. A thousand times yes,” he exclaimed.

With Recovery Slowing, the Jobs Outlook Dims; Double Dip Recession looms

By CATHERINE RAMPELL
Published: July 30, 2010

There is no more disputing it: the economic recovery in the United States has indeed slowed.

The nation’s economy has been growing for a year, with few new jobs to show for it. Now, with the government reporting a growth rate of just 2.4 percent in the second quarter and federal stimulus measures fading, the jobs outlook appears even more discouraging.

“Given how weak the labor market is, how long we’ve been without real growth, the rest of this year is probably still going to feel like a recession,” said Prajakta Bhide, a research analyst for the United States economy at Roubini Global Economics.“It’s still positive growth — rather than contraction — but it’s going to be very, very protracted.”

“We need 2.5 percent growth just to keep the unemployment rate where it is,” said Christina Romer, chairwoman of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers.

Recent reports from Fed policy makers suggest the central bank has become increasingly worried about where the economy is headed.

A separate report released on Friday by the University of Michigan and Thomson Reuters showed that consumer confidence tumbled in July.

Obama's OMB nominee got $900,000 after Citigroup bailout

Bonus issued after 2008 report

By Jim McElhatton - The Washington Times
Wednesday, July 28, 2010

EXCLUSIVE:

President Obama's choice to be the government's chief budget officer received a bonus of more than $900,000 from Citigroup Inc. last year -- after the Wall Street firm for which he worked received a massive taxpayer bailout.

The money was paid to Jacob Lew in January 2009, about two weeks before he joined the State Department as deputy secretary of state, according to a newly filed ethics form. The payout came on top of the already hefty $1.1 million Citigroup compensation package for 2008 that he reported last year.

Administration officials and members of Congress last year expressed outrage that executives at other bailed-out firms, such as American International Group Inc., awarded bonuses to top executives.

More Hypocrisy and Corruption.

Do you ever get tired? Do you ever feel like most people around you are just plain ignorant? During the 2008 Campaign, I just kept hearing...I'm voting for Obama because:

He's black and I'm not a racist (from white/asian/other paleface voters)

Obama's gonna give me five 'undred dollar (from 18-22yrs old)

He will bring our troops home now.

He will fix the economy and save my house.

He will pay my rent.

He will pay for my cell phone.

Seriously, do YOU ever get tired? I am. I'm just gonna go on. Vote when it comes time and stock up on TP and water.

To all you "I blame Hurricane Katrina- 9/11 - L.A. Riot (s){have to put that in the plural context)- BP Oil Disaster, etc. is ALL G.W.'s fault???

I'm sure he disagrees with your wanting to give the Feds the power to dissolve companies the banks deem to large to fail. Very Marxist of you.

What do you think. Do you think he agree with you?

Do Republicans even know what they stand for anymore?

This libertarian is anything but Repub. If he sticks to his guns he'll have to admit...

On Abortion
Libertarians: We oppose actions that compel, prohibit, regulate or subsidize abortion, sterilization or any other forms of birth control.

Republican Platform: Abortion without exception is wrong and should be opposed. Even with Federal mandates prohibiting it.

Same Sex Marriage
Libertarians: Hold that unions between adults are a private matter and should not be the subject of private licensing, regardless of sex. They call for the Feds and State to not restrict or give preferential treatment to private contracts between adults.

Republican Platform: We should amend the U.S. constitution and the Minnesota Constitution to define marriage as the legal union of a man and a woman.

Gambling
Libertarians:“Because gambling is a voluntary activity, and therefore a victimless crime…”

Republican Platform:“We should eliminate all state-sponsored gambling and oppose any expansion of gambling in Minnesota.”

Drugs
Libertarians: "Call for an end to the ‘War on Drugs,’ which like all previous wars on drugs is in reality a war by the federal, state and local government on the people it is supposed to protect from war. Until such time as the prohibition of drugs is repealed,we call for an end to the denial of pain relieving drugs such as marijuana and heroin to those who are suffering.”

Republican Platform: The Republican Party platform has no provision advocating the legalization of marijuana and heroin.

Prostitution
Libertarians:“Are opposed to all regulation of activities such as…prostitution”

Republican Platform: The Republican Party of Minnesota’s platform has no provision advocating the legalization of prostitution.

Right To Life
Libertarians:“…terminally or hopelessly ill persons should have the right to die at the time and place and under the conditions of their own choosing.”

Republican Platform:“The U.S. and Minnesota Constitutions should be amended to restore legal protection for the lives of innocent human beings from conception to natural death.”

Repubs and Conservatives on this board seem to not have a clue. They were all fooled into supporting Neo-conservative Bush/Cheney. And it pretty much destroyed the party by putting off the base.

Then Repubs, to keep up with the Jone's, placed a Black Male as head of the RNC, even though he is PRO-AFFIRMATIVE ACTION and PRO-ABORTION.

Any wonder why the repub party is lost. They and the rightwing posters have a platform build on shifting sand.

Now they want a PRO-ABORTION guy to win the next Presidential Election.

Be careful what you wish for sheep. But you deserve all you get when you ignore the facts so not to hurt your make-believe world.

Your post was helpful, even though I believe we are on opposite sides of the fence, I hope more read about the HUGE differences in political views between true conservative Republicans like myself, and Libertarians.

I pray that we pay more attention to the details. Instead of voting for someone who dislikes the Dem philosphy, we as Republicans should be more concerned about voting for someone who promotes our values.

I for one am far right, and I know a libertarian government would be a disaster for republican conservative causes.

As a conservative, I hope not. This man is more liberal than you think. Forget banning abortion and the killing of innocents if he and his kind or in office.

The Republican party is lost if we nominate a Libertarian like Rand.

I'm sure his plan to repeal the civil rights act will be a big hit with the kkk in Kentucky. Ironically, it will be the large black population there that ends his political career, thanks to the......civil rights act! Karma is a bitch!!

Agreed. The republicans in Kentucky should vote for a 3rd party candidate instead. That way the Dems will pick up that Senate seat too!
