There was an interesting episode on PBS "This Old House" that showed a restored home powered by solar panels. The powerhouse cost $50,000 and was a separate building from the main house. The powerhouse supplies enough electricity and hot water for the main house except for the air conditioning. This is a money loser for this family but they wanted to set an example. They will never recover their $50,000 investment and repairs and maintenance will cost them much more in the future. They are still dependent on the power company for air conditioning and for harsh winters when their powerhouse can't meet the demand.
