Those who love the stars need not fear the night.
Good rest, Bob; you've earned it.

It's not like Bob paid for all that flying out of his own pocket. Let's have a big round of applause to all the benefactors that made Bob's flying and military career possible, the US taxpayer.

I grew up in the Air Force and am the mother of a soldier; I learned that regardless of who's footing the bill, it takes a special breed to take those planes up. I'd much rather my tax dollars go those men and women with the courage to "take it to the limit" - and that includes the space program.
RIP, Bob.

Women were never allowed to participate in the X-plane program and now, aircraft are built from computer design to their maiden flights without so much as a Chuck Yeager needed. In fact, the military is fastly approaching a time period where remote controlled pilot-less drones are doing more missions than piloted planes and in the not to distant future, autonomous drones will replace the remote controlled ones.

Yep your right, BUT he wasn't making that much to have has butt hanging out as far as it was. You could have a little respect for a real hero and take a back seat as a tax payer for a few days my friend.

Had he been born Mexican, he'd have the taxation power of the government of Mexico behind him.

Yeah, it's good that he was born in the US, the power of the US taxpayer could set him up real good for using all that German technology to set records. Hahahahaha.

You did know that without German technology, the US would still be flying straight wing jet fighters in stead of swept wing ones, right?

Actually, yes, I was aware that delta wing configuration was German; a great deal of our original rocket tech was also German. Aren't you glad we won that war?

I'm glad that Churchill started it, because it left Roosevelt the option of not violating his candidacy promise of not DIRECTLY starting any wars. So, at least he had that going for him, which is nice.

Nice, my a$$- Roosevelt was sweating bullets that it took so long to get us into a war; he needed one to boost the economy. He never intended for the "New Deal" to go on so long, it was unsustainable. I can't cite the source off the top of my head, but there's some evidence he knew - months in advance - that Japan was going to hit Hawaii, and already had plans for military expenditures. If I can find the source again, I'll post it, but it may be in books, not on the Internet.

Read the book, "Human Smoke: The Beginnings of World War II, the End of Civilization" by Nicholson Baker. It is chock full of citable resources regarding the build up and beginning of WWII.

Did you know that the US and England refused to change immigration quotas to receive the German Jews that Hitler wanted re-located out side of Germany? Did you know that England's blockade of Germany kept German Jews from leaving Germany? How many times did Churchill bomb civilian population centers in Germany before the Germans decided to retaliate by bombing England back?

Read "Human Smoke", it is an eye opener. And, it has some information about how the US fleet from San Diego was posted in Hawaii to languish there until they were attacked, even though the commander of that fleet did protest their being being detained there.

I'll have to pick up the book, but most of what you have there I already knew - my daughter is (in between her MP duties) majoring in history with emphasis on WWII, so I have to read a lot to stay ahead of her ;-), although right now I'm reading up on WWI, because a lot of the issues that started that war are among the ones that ignited the second. Fascinating time in history.
