I am a sixteen year old girl. I am petite. So pretty much i am short and skinny. I am graduating this year from high school. Do you know if there is anyway i could get into the AST program? Do i have to be 18? Do i have to be able to lift so much, swim so long, run so long, etc?

It is probably to late but don't do it, don't get married and don't have kids....Join the Coast Guard and live! Thnn maybe the wife and kids as it is a huge committment. If I would have only listened to my father in-law 25 years ago.

I'm looking to doing the USCG for firefighting and paramedic training (Good or Bad idea??). I was wondering if they go to war or are they in Iraq doing anything? Also I have a 2 yr degree from Boise State University and currently going through an EMT-B course. Will these help me to enlist as an officer? Can anybody help out here...

My son (19) seems to be getting the runaround by the CG recruiter. He met with them in June, took the ASVAB, scored in the 70's, filled out many other forms, but still has no reporting date. Is this SOP for CG recruiting in NJ? He is getting frustrated - and condsidering going USN.

its great that you already have a mindset on what you are going to do in the future but you also have to keep other options in mind you are young and have many oportunities availible. no its not to early to make your decision but just don't be tunnel visioned on just that one goal.

I'm an active duty OS1. Couple things. To the kid with the three violent crimes, you are disqualified by your record. To the kid smoking weed, you need to evaluate what kind of life style you want to live, you will not be able to get away with that in the CG, I have seen LOTS of people kicked out for that, and there is no second chance if you pop. To the person with bad knees, depends on how bad, talk to a recruiter, but most pre-existing med conditions disqualify you. To the guy that wants to be a rescue swimmer but can't swim, that course has a 50% attrition rate, so yes, you have to be able to swim. No, officers are not allowed to be rescue swimmers. To the guy worried about the showing part, when you are a non rate you will most likely be sharing a room on a 378 foot cutter will 11 other guys. So count your privacy out. To the first question, you will not be able to move your girlfriend with you, and you will not get an allowence for housing until you are married or a petty officer. Tuition questions, yes, the CG has all kinds of education programs.

Fire fighting or paramedic? Limited, but yes. The thing I don't get is people joining the CG and wanting to stay home. I have been all over the world with the CG, you are required to be deployable world wide. Your chance of getting to stay in your home town is SMALL. But why would you want to?

To the guy with the family, the CG is a tough but great life. You will be seperated from your family for periods during your career, but it is a rewarding and honorable career. To the people asking what the minimum asvab score is, if you have to ask, you should be joining the marines.
