I am 16 and really wanting to become a rescue swimmer. I am a great swimmer (state) and am pretty athletic and smart with a 3.8 gpa . Now my question is if i wanted to get into the USCG and become a rescue swimmer, would there be a waiting list I would go on. Because I have heard there is one, and dont know for sure. I have applied to go to a coast guard summer program they have and have not yet heard anything back. But is there any advice besides not letting anyone tell me I cant , that you could give me to help me out. Thank you

I swam at Stanford, 8 x 800 relays and Freestyle and went to the Trials. I pulled a quad but would have made the Olympic Team otherwise. I have a 3.8 GPA in biochemistry and opted out of medical school to try and be a CG rescue swimmer.

I lasted three weeks before I was broken.

So I have been thinking of signing up for the oast guard and i didn't want to fill out any official paperwork before finding out what charges the coast guard will not accept? I have a possession and transportation(someone else had it in their possession) charge of marijuana and waas wondering tif that would immediately disqualify me?
I wanted to sign up and go to the USCG Academy, but i was planning on doing whatever it takes to make it in; I'm planning on talking to the judge and see if he can get any charges off my record for the purpose of enlisting in th USCG for several years or more. a reply would be appreciates - mathew

Hey Matt, to answer your question (and that of the post above you): your chances are slim. Generally, any FELONY charge will disqualify you. And forget about the Academy, because even a misdemeanor will usually get you disqualified. Let me be frank, the CG is one of, it not THE, hardest service to get into. Even for enlisted. I say that because no amount of perfect SAT/ACT scores or swim meets won matter. The recruiter's job is to find a person with character. A person who will sacrifice for another's well-being. There are no followers in the CG. We are all imbued with the act first, ask later mentality which we demonstrated so professionally after Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti earthquake. For example, I was trying to join the Air Force, but because I dropped out of high school and got a GED they required me to have at least 15 college credits to enlist. But the CG didn't care. They saw in me the character they were looking for. Someone who will take charge when necessary and enter 15-footers to pull people in distress out of the water.

My point is, it all depends on what the recruiter is WILLING to do for you. If you show them that the Coast Guard needs you as much as you do them, usually they will do whatever they can to get you in the door. But from there, it's up to you to live up to the lofty standards of the world's greatest lifesavers.
