DO I have to take the ASVAB again?
Yes, You have to take the ASVAB again and go through MEPS all over. Retake the oath and resubmit for a security clearance. You will lose certain medals and awards, like CAB and the rainbow ribbon, but coast guard will give you a Combat Action Ribbon instead. You keep the personal awards and medals like commendation medal or overseas service ribbon.

Army will want all there stuff back except for poly pros, and a few other consumable items. If I were you, I would lose the sleeping bag and pay for it because I miss my gortex sleeping bag.

Oh, and you may have to go through bootcamp again. Myself along with a prior marine were in bootcamp while a "pit stop" (like warrior transition I think) class was going on. Most likely you will be dropped to an E3 unless you can really convince them you're job carries over. I was an MP and they didn't let me take ME which I'm glad now because most MEs seem to think everyone are terrorists.

Coast Guard is also downsizing, so it may be quite a wait before you could even join.

FOR STARTERS THE EDUCTION BENEFITS IN THE ARMY ARE NOT BETTER ITS A DOD ORDER SO ALL BRANCHES ARE THE SAME AND SECOND.. THE CG IS NOT DOD THEY ARE NOT MILTARY!!!!
CG is actually still considerd to be part of the military during wartime. Only during peace time does it fall under DHS. However, during peacetime, when the other services are sitting around waiting for something to do, The CG is still at work protecting the country.

Given that our state took 1% of the Coast Guard applicants the year my son enlisted, you DO have to earn the spot. It's not like other recruiting offices with flashy cars and carnival displays, where you walk in and sign up. Call me when the other branches get that competitive and we can discuss who's "full of themselves."
That's great and all but it's the same In all branches. Im in the army currently and I sat at home for 14 months after I enlisted waiting on a job to open up for me. I'm still in AIT to this day even though I've been enlisted for 18 months now. And yes the coast guard are very full of themselves. Not saying the army is any better but I'm here with a soldier that's prior coast guard and he's probably the most arrogant person I've ever met.
