Philippines To Buy 12 S. Korean Fighter Jets
Jan. 30, 2013 - 08:07AM |
By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE |
MANILA — The Philippines will buy 12 South Korean FA-50 fighter jets to strengthen its poorly armed military, government spokesmen said Jan. 30 amid increasing maritime tensions with China.
The FA-50s will be the first fighter jets to be operated by the Philippine air force since it retired the last of its U.S.-designed F-5 fighters in 2005, said President Benigno Aquino’s spokesman, Edwin Lacierda.
“We don’t have any existing jets right now that are in use, therefore it is necessary for us to upgrade. This is part of the ongoing process of modernizing our military hardware,” he told reporters.
Lacierda said the jets would be used for “training, interdiction and disaster response” and would use their aerial cameras to survey areas. He stressed that the planned purchase was “not aimed at any particular country” despite the new tensions with China over conflicting maritime territorial claims in the South China Sea.
Defense department spokesman Peter Galvez said the FA-50 was chosen because it fit all the country’s requirements and because of its cost, adding that 18.9 billion pesos ($309 million) had been budgeted for the acquisition.
Manila will now begin negotiations for the aircraft, he said, adding that the government will seek to have two planes delivered as soon as possible so Filipino pilots can begin training on them.
In recent months, the cash-strapped Philippines has stepped up efforts to modernize its military in the face of China’s increasing assertiveness in pressing its claims to most of the South China Sea.
Although the Philippines has long relied on its defense ties with the United States for most of its arms, it has recently been seeking more weaponry from other countries such as Poland, Spain, Italy, Canada and France. President Aquino discussed acquiring more South Korean military equipment when South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak visited the country in November 2011.
how many more years will you listen and believe this bullshite?

want to buy 2 of them to have here for immediate training? who is going to train them?

do you REALLY want flips in the sky with fighter jets? armed?
good its all just fairy tales and talk. talk is the cheapest and most widely used form of defense in the filipins.

While it is widely known that i am anti America -i think that that the Philippines should first looked to America if they want to buy jet fighters.New zealand had some A4 skyhawks (oldies but goddies) that we would have sold at rock bottom prices -these would have been ideal and affordable for the Phils.

Well, While I am not Don the American, I will happily oblige.

http://globalnation.inquirer.net/16777/us-has...

The United States gave over a half billion dollars to the Philippines during the last decade. That is in addition to the military hardware that was 'donated' to the cause.

I have been a pilot for half of my life now. It is a skill that requires constant practice and discipline. I always found it funny that our helicopters survived years of use, were completely refurbished and given gratis to the Philippines only to see them crashed within months of arrival. The Philippine Air Force trains their student pilots on computer games! No, these are not state of the art flight simulators, these are copies of games. It is little wonder why they don't have jets. They would destroy them.

In 2013, the United States will provide almost $60 million dollars in aid to the Philippines. Maybe they can buy those two jets from SK and waste it all in one fireball.

the point is that it takes years of training to be a fighter pilot.
then years of combat to be a good fighter pilot. constant raining is required. a certain specific mentality is required. fighter pilots are a very rare and highly educated breed.
so many foreign pilots all train in the US. not flips?

all that aside, what will the flips do with fighter jets? they have never in their history been a military force or an aggressor.

think about it. how many years now have they been asking for jets and ships armed and ready? dont you think if their allies wanted to have them that theyd already be here? no one wants to give or sell the flips arms. they know what the results will be.

better if they buy them from NZ imo.

its just not in the cards.

See??? Will do this, wants to do that. The article also says "cash strapped Philippines" when their "suppose" to be the new "tiger economy" with all this growth. Someone is lying somewhere or is the Philippines using the normal practice of poor mouthing to get someone else to pay for it.

READ!!!! Nowhere has the Philippines paid for any of this stuff yet. 309 million budgeted for jet fighters????? Who farted that number out. 309 million in jets isn't enough to put on an air show.

no engines or electronics in them.

whats funny is they dont stop to realize when they write this bullshite that their figures never add up to what they are saying. it is just the flipino way to do their best to impress anyone who may not be so alert. then these goofy fcukers get on here and use it as gospel. the gospel according to the idiots.

FA-50 fighter is a good choice and parts availability won't be a problem because Philippines is near South Korea logistically and it is also cheaper. The Philippines changed their minds from buying 12 TA-50 LIFT aircraft to 12 FA-50 fighter aircraft although a LIFT aircraft is still required for training.

there you have it -if they try to do something for their own defence -you say they are incapable - if they dont do anything thing they are useless lazy good-for-nothing beggars relying on the USA for defence - i do wish you guys would make up your minds as to what you think they should do .

Both, even if they get the fighters they can't maintain them and can't train the pilots. Right now they won't spend the money for the gas for their C-130 or even fix it to fly.

Put in the air and fly what they have now. Fix and operate the tanks they have now then tell us what their going to do because in the land of the "present" the way they take care of what they have those "jets" and dreams of advanced fighters are just runway ornaments.

The Philippines signed a five-year agreement with Italy earlier this year for the purchase of military hardware.

Defense Undersecretary Hernando Manalo also said that in January the nation aims to spend as much as 70 billion pesos ($1.6 billion) to buy two squadrons of military jets(A squadron includes between 16 and 24 jets).

Ok that agreement was signed one year ago now. January has come and gone tomorrow and they have not spent one peso yet.

Come on in a corrupt government like this where everything is looted do you really think that money will be around long. They have a scam on everything down to paper clips.

How many times have you been to a Government agency and they don't even have ink for printers. People have to get their own copies because Government workers would even steal printer ink.
