DUH! Is the US Government, finally realizing that their, "Guantonimo-type", jails, all over the globe,(that dispense cruel and unusual punishment, that is not allowed under 'The Geneva Convention'), will (probably) bring dishonor to America?
The following quote, is from a former US officer who was in charge in Gitmo, and resigned his post, and went on a lecture-tour of US Universities, to explain how the Trials were to be handled, by the different The U.S. government’s handling of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba puts its own soldiers and citizens at risk if they are detained by foreign forces, the former chief prosecutor at Guantanamo says. QUOTE: Retired Air Force Col. Morris Davis served as Guantanamo’s chief prosecutor from 2005 to 2007 and will give four lectures at Triangle-area colleges Thursday and Friday. Davis says the United States cannot expect other countries to observe the laws of war if it doesn’t uphold them itself. “The United States led the effort, particularly in the wake of World War II, in creating the Geneva Conventions and creating this body of law to regulate conflict,” Davis said by phone from Virginia.“And since 9/11, we’ve really turned our back on it.” The detention facility at Guantanamo has been a center of legal debate since it opened in 2002 to hold detainees from the wars in Afghanistan and then Iraq. What happens there is of interest to people in North Carolina who believe that a Smithfield-based company, Aero Contractors Ltd., has served as an air taxi service for the CIA, taking detainees from Guantanamo to countries where they can be questioned under conditions not allowed under U.S. laws. The process is known as extraordinary rendition. Read more here: http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/01/30/264443... of the US Government. |

Smart too, as you can see, that they keep up their despicable torture of their prisoners, in jails hidden all over the world,{in other countries), so they can (legally?) break,'The Geneva Conventions', without the American populace knowing what their elected government was up to. Pretty sneaky eh? This doesn't mean we,(Canadians'), wouldn't help the USA, if they were under attack,(Here in North America). It does mean, that WE DO NOT APPROVE OF THESE SNEAKY TACTICS, IN ORDER TO TORTURE OTHER HUMAN BEINGS, TO GARNER INFORMATION. It opens the door to retaliatory treatment of US soldiers, when they are captured in the various frays your government starts around the world. Just remember, "YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE", my friend. |

I like the old adage that you can measure a society on how well they treat their prisoners.
Indefinate detainment with no trial is not a good measure of how the US is treating it's "prisoners". Gitmo is like a case where a prosecutor will not drop charges even though he has a confession and dna from another party. People do not like to reverse decisions or alter their stances out of stubborness in order to maintain the PERCEPTION they were right the first time. Many US officials simply don't want to be questioned or second guessed. They don't want to feel guilt, regret or embarassment by changing a their position many consider to be wrong. This is as much about politics including impressing the hardline granny voters. Or maintaining the PERCEPTION that they or the US does not make bad decisions or always has the moral high ground. I remember the cold war "jokes" or threats about the Russians sending their citizens to Siberia or a Gulag. There might not be slave labor at Gitmo but it is basically a prison in the middle of no where-most detainees are thousands of miles away from home. It's not like they are at the local jail. There will always be people against the US so it's about time to set up something in federal prison and trial system for these alledged offenders. It's over a decade of the so called war on terror. Either you try these 'terror' suspects or release like other US prisoners. |

Do you feel safer simply because Gitmo exists? Are you an armchair quarterback or spectator at a street fight egging the combatants on? Are you going to throw books to the sharks as well? The problem with Gitmo and the so called war on terror is that you are fighting an idea, a thought, a different point of view which many of these are at Gitmo for. How do you fight an idea. Thoughts an ideas go on forever or can be thought up by completely different people. These 'terrorists' are like the corner drug dealer, you arrest one and another be selling on a corner 2 blocks away the next day. Different opinions. customs, religions, and/or unfortunetly terrorists/fanatics will almost always exist to the end of man. Get over it. Deal with it. Accept it. You can only minimize it without becoming a terrorist yourself. |

It IS basically what goes around comes around. The US right now is looking at Gitmo and the 'war' on terror with tunnel vision. They boxed themselves with the policies of George and Dick. If Obama has kept his promises and closed Gitmo we'd be past this issue now. I still find it amazing that you see more pictures and video of Gitmo from the foreign press. It's like they don't want a so called domestic terrorist to know what Gitmo looks like. |
