Two years ago, I was privilaged to have meet an active duty Iraq war veteran. I was saddened to hear that he committed suicide in May of this year. He was among the growing number of active duty personnel who are being told they will not be allowed to re-enlist or are being forced out of the military before they are eligable to retire. This particular soldier was a member of the 82nd airbore division and had dedicated 18 years of his life to the service of his country only to be told he would not be allowed to stay long enough to retire. At the age of 40, with no skills that would transfer to the civilian workforce and one of the many who had been diagnosed with PTSD, he apparently felt there were no other options but to take his own life. The final insult came from the military's response to his suicide when he recieved NO military honors for his funeral service.

Having seen first hand (at the end of the Viet Nam War), the effects of a military "draw down" when active combat draws to a close, I understand the frustrations and stress this places on our active duty military personnel who had planned to make the military their life's work. To have dedicated a large portion of your life to something and than be told that your time investment means nothing is indeed stressful and the military does nothing to assist their personnel's transition to civilian life.

Like its all a surprise Gov't doesn't gve a damn. They use soldiers as free vaccine experiment lab rats and ignore the outcomes like Gulf War syndrome. Stories like this show how bogus, paid for "research" is invented to help government shed its responsibility.
