If it was returned for cash, returned to inventory and then re-sold, there is no longer a record of the initial sale or it's return.
A re-sale essentially voids the initial transaction -- and purges it from the system in a matter of weeks.
We are talking 5 years ago.
This would be an exercise in futility, in my opinion.
Good for ratings - but weak for making the case.
Sounds too desperate.

What difference does it make? She did not use the gas cans in the murder unless they aren't telling us everything? They have bigger fish to fry than whether she returned a gas can.
Next, they will be fixating on her stopping at a Starbuck's because she is Mormon and shouldn't be where coffee and tea are served, much less drink anything except water there.
