This should help. I read the solution on the car forum some time ago, when my 98 Jeep Cherokee had the same stalling problems. The screws are shorting out the board inside the ECM. What you do is back out the screws, located under the plugs, on the front of the ECM (husband says they're a booger to get to and they are torx head screws). Back out the screws 2 full turns and you're problems should be solved (just like mine were). Give it a try. The guy who posted this on the car forum some time ago is a GENIUS! My Jeep is back to normal =:0)

I have changed the PCM, oxygen sensor, crank sensor and wire harness, along with a tune up. Car is in dealership at this time and have not solved problem as of yet. I am going to suggest about the screws. Did you have anymore problems and did you change anything else?

update from #23 Feb. 13
PCM was changed and it worked for about 3 weeks, but still acting like it wanted to stall maybe 3 times in those 3 weeks. Today, it left me stranded for an hour when i got off work, then finally started and made it home (5 minutes away). So, this afternoon i changed out the catalytic converter and would not start at all after. I haven't changed the O2 sensors yet, and i read online that it is advised to change both at same time for proper function of the sensors. I am going tomorrow for the O2 sensors so i'll let everyone know how it goes.

I tried the screw trick it worked for a week or so before coming back. My local NAPA dealer actually stocks the PCM for this car "because they go bad ALL THE TIME" he also said "I sell more Jeep PCM's than any other PCM" and "a jeep Garage down the street buys one a week". I live in Tallahassee, FL population about 160,000 for 1 mechanic to go through about 52 PCM's a year when he only works on jeeps tells me it is a crappy PCM design. DON'T BUY A USED PCM!!! they are 1/3 the price (about $100) but if it is this common it may work or it may already be bad spend the $321 on a reconditioned one and be done with it if the screw trick dosen't work.
--DON'T EVER BUY A JEEP, P-E-R-I-O-D !!!!!!--They are a POS.-- Chrysler products have the best engineering in the world--They just can't put it together and make a reliable vehicle!!! Especially the Jeep!!("just one man's opinion")

Amy (03/18/10),
Get a reconditioned PCM. Your symptoms were IDENTICAL to mine. After installing a reconditioned PCM, I have had 6+ months of trouble free (non-stalling) driving. Good luck!

I wrapped a light weight aluminum wire a few times around the end of the throttle cable so that it forced the idle up a little. I now can use one foot, even when it miss fires a little bit. Perhaps I won't run into anyone while I'm waiting to do the trade or repair thang.

In my work I often remind myself that just because you find a problem with a machine, that doesn't mean there's not one or two more that will be revealed after the first is repaired. I try not to spend too much on something that's very used. Any old wire or 1/8 inch spacer, and five minutes.

Thanks for that informattion. but could you give me that number to the Floride Co. on Ebay or the email address so i can order that part.

I had the same problem for my Jeep Grand Cherokee 1998 6 cyl. I replaced all possible sensors, cables, spark plugs, distributor cap, etc. at one point the backfiring was so bad that the mufler exploded. Twice, changed the catalitic converter and the oxigen sensor. Finally tried the PCM screw treatment, Nothing worked, The last try before throwing the car away was to try and exchange the PCM. I bougth a refurbished one from a Floride Co. on Ebay. AND FINALLY, the problem is solved. Have not have the problem recurr since changing the PCM.The car runs like new.
My advise, then, is to change the PCM as soon as the problem shows up. IT is not the sensors, THE PCM GOES BAD>!!!
Good luck everybody

I had a 2003 laredo. 2 Jeep dealers kept it for 8 months and could not fix the stalling. Finally a local mechanic fixed it. The battery I put in it last summer was defective and was not pulling enough amps so I was getting the code P0107. Replaced battery and it is fine now I have spent 100s at the dealers and they could not fix it!!

I'm an Automobile Technician and owner of a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee...the problem these vehicles have is the PCMs. My advice is to have a new one installed by a reputable facility. Mine had codes relating to the primary circuit of the coil, and it kept stalling and backfiring. Besides blowing up two mufflers and replacing the coil, crank sensor and trying the so-called PCM fastener "fix"...I went thru 4 (!) aftermarket rebuilt or reconditioned PCMs till I got a good one...the other lasted from 5 seconds to one month...get a new one and have a dealer perform the flashing of the PCM...then replace your spark plugs, ignition wires and distributor cap and rotor. This will fix it for another 10 years. Mine has a 4.0 engine with the original transmission with 270k miles and still running strong. What happens is that people ignore basic maintenance and due to excessive wear, there is too much electrical resistance in the coil wire and ignition so power backfeeds into the PCM and the heat burns up the circuitry inside.

I have a 1998 JGC Laredo 6 cyl auto 4X4, 170km. The jeep starts perfectly and idles fine after about 10-30 seconds of driving, the jeep starts to sputter and appears to want to stall but doesn't. It does this most times but not every time, after about 10 more seconds, the problem is gone and works great until you shut off the vehicle it sits for 10 - 15 minutes, starts all over again. No codes and no check engine light. I recently replaced the speed control sensor to correct another problem would this be related? Any help? Would be greatly appreciated

Mine does the exact same thing. I also need to know what the problem is!

I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and is doing the staling problem. Last year I took it to the dealer and they"fixed" for about 6 months. today it is back to the same thing. I took it to a garage and they charged me a lot but they didn't fix it. I don't know what to do anymore. Does somebody know a reliable mechanic that really knows how to fix it? I just want to sell it but I want to fix it first. Thanks

A year ago we purchased a 98 JGC $CASH$ with only 60k & one Previous owner in Perfect Condition Beautiful Interior the Works!& the Price? Sounded great!! 4months later.... The Annoying Stalling started. We fixed Everything you can think of on that truck,we 1st started with a good tune up & oil change & nothing.I then went thru a handful of mechanics all were stumped & all came to their conclusions! I finally decided to just take it to "The Experts" @ a Jeep Dealer & even they are Worst!! they just take your money and cant fully tell u what it has because you have to go thru a long process & an emptying of ur pocket $$$.Long story short we have replaced the spark plug cables and distributor cap/rotor,battery,ALL the sensors!!!(NONE LEFT OUT) the CAT converter the fuel Pump, The last & most Expensive, The Computer!! you can get someone to install but the dealer "Has" to program.....your looking @ almost $900 :( Finally we decided to sell it "AS IS".We are Sooo thankful it sold within the 1st day it was posted. The new owner thinks he knows what it has, Good thing it stalled while he was test driving too! "He says it's the Gas we use that it needs to run with Premium Gas......R U Serious? I said to my self!! Good Luck!! Is all I can say to all the 98 JGC owners.I gave up!! Though its a nice family car, I will NEVER BUY ONE AGAIN!!!

I have a 99 Jeep grand cherokee. Replaced all the sensors here, as well as cursed a few mechanics. Finally, after more than two weeks of getting stranded, I can post the solution here... IT IS THE CATALYTIC Converter..

Reference to post may 25 2009, I now have my 98 grand fixed. There are two O2 sensors on hot and one cold. I first replaced the hot (at the converter) that did not correct the problem. I them replaced the front near the manifold? Anyway that fixed the problem. The O2 sensor was about $140 and 1 hour labor. Hope this helps.

Let me retract my celebratory post... The catalytic converter is not the cause... Back to square one - minus 1000.00 so far!:-(
