On the surface, it would seem to me that sociopathy embeds itself in societies that are prone to narcissism and fluid situational moralities; but then again, perhaps the human heart has always been this way.

"collective spiritual depravity"
Is the author assuming the term "spiritual" to be religious in nature? If so, he makes an erroneous hypothesis that the growing population of the religiously-unaffiliated, agnostics or atheists are not law abiding, empathetic or ethical. Define the use of spiritual first.
The meaning of "spirituality" has evolved into a loosey-goosey umbrella word that encompasses followers of self-help, the mystical or otherwise esoteric individual belief systems. How then can anyone be spiritually depraved, or corrupted spiritually, if spirituality isn't even defined as one specific concrete idea? If he is referring to religious belief, which religion does he assume as inherently not depraved? Does he get to define that for everyone, and if so, it wouldn't be collective.
And what does this have to do with Arias? Is everyone collectively to blame for her individual actions?
We have laws. Arias was a suspect for allegedly breaking the law, she was arrested, and is now a defendant in a court of law. The system seems to be working.
If the author wanted to make an argument about how bad behavior from "pretty" people draws attention, and that media is capitalizing on it, because the public is buying it, I wish he would have actually done that. But that is nothing new. People have always paid attention. Some of it goes back to antiquity and is featured in ancient religious books. Read any vintage newspaper and you will find salacious or sensational stories. The only difference now is that modern technology has made the stories more ubiquitous. Further, it's cheaper to produce reality programming and news-ertainment than it is to pay intelligent journalists, talented writers, directors, actors, editors or post production staff. So in a capitalistic society, with a free market, manufacturing cheaply and ending up with a larger profit margin, appears to be sanctioned. That is the root of the headlines, not any "collective spiritual depravity"…whatever that means.
