Alyce Laviolette is doing a pretty good job as a witness. She bases her domestic violence judgement upon friends of Travis and Travis' own escalating rage and verbal abuse toward Jodi. No matter how angry and disgusted we may feel toward Jodi she still has the right to a defense. Alyce is probably right about Travis physically abusing Jodi.
I don't think Alyce's testimony will get Jodi off the hook. Even if Travis attacked her in the bathroom, Jodi went way beyond self defense in her horrendous murder of Travis. Also, it does seem that she planned the murder when she brought the gun to his house. I don't believe for a second that was Travis' gun.

Lets see... as someone who proclaims to be an expert in Domestic Violence, she publically stated that she found Jodi to be a victim, not an abuser, even though evidence shows that she stalked, harassed, committed vandalism, yet also tried to be manipulative, using sex and whatever means necessary to get him to allow her to visit. I AM an expert in domestic violence, I've investigated 100's of cases. Abusers are "consistent" and predictable. They don't date 3+people, show no signs of controlling behavior, then all of a sudden, out of the blue, attack the last one. And despite her tesimony, no victim of abuse should receive the punishment that Jodi inflicted. Rewarding the abuser is not what this profession is all about. While I do not think people should send hate mail to this therapist, after hearing her testimony, I would suspect her license to treat patients in Arizona might be short lived.

Alyce is a therapist in California not Arizona. As a psychotherapist for over thirty years I can tell you that "birds of a feather flock together." Both Jodi and Travis had personality issues and they had a traumatic bond. Jodi has the right to a defense in our system of justice. I'm not saying I agree with LaViolette. All I am saying is that she based her testimony on collateral evidence. She is a defense witness. That is how our system works. It is horrifying to me that people want to destroy her career for doing what she was hired to do.

Let me say that I don't believe "AL" should be treated any less by the general public because of her testimony. However, from my perspective, she did a major disservice to our profession as it pertains to domestic violence. Jodi is the classic abuser. She demonstated numerous signs associated with women abusers, such as; controlling/compulsive, manipulative, seductive. A lay person might view her as subservient, although a deeper look into the evidence displayed shows someone who was an active participant. Onto stalking, vandalism and ultimately violence. She appears to suffer from classic personality disorder, possibly bipolar, but since I'm not analyzing her I'll stay away from any diagnosis. Despite AL's testimony, I find the need to reassure victims that they should not tolerate these behaviors from a partner because their better and stronger which allows them to move forward with perseverence. While most abusers are male, this is not always the case. Most males don't report the abuse, the testosterone doctrine. As for being a paid witness, I have also served in the same capacity numerous times and one thing that is required is to always be objective and "tell the truth".

I worked for many years as a sexual abuse therapist through the university f Cal. I had to testify many times. I always took the stance that you should just tell the truth and that if you sometimes agreed with the opposing side they respected your testimony. Alyce was really silly sometimes when she said she believed Jodi (especially about Travis being a pedophile). She really undermined her credibility. She is an old time feminist I guess and she seems to side with women no matter what. Plus I guess Jodi has some kind of charm (although I fail to see it).
I do think it is possible that Travis attacked Jodi physically. His rage in those emails, IMs and texts was over the top. As I said though, she went way beyond self defense.
Did you hear her father say that she was planning to go on a camping trip with some men and she would be the only female? She packed a nine millimeter and a serrated knife for the trip. Instead of refusing the trip--she planned to go armed. Someone commented that she was planning and willing to kill again! She goes beyond borderline---I saw lots of borderlines and none of them carried guns around. I hope she gets life!

Also, I usually like to view people not as victims or persecutors. Except of course the children I saw for years. Jodi is a murderer. Each client has a history that usually explains their behavior and most could have been victims at some point. I don't like the view that some people are wearing white hats and some black like in an old western. I used to run into therapists who refused to see perpetrators. I saw every person in sexual abuse families. I even did some men's groups for perps. That is my view of psychotherapy. The pathology is fascinating. The only people I could not tolerate seeing were murderers. I saw a few, but quickly sent them packing.

I spotted the feminist characteristic of Alyce, but I don't view it necessarily as a negative trait, but certainly one that a professional would keep behind the scenes so to speak in order to avoid the perception of bias. I did not hear that about the camping trip, very insightful. Jodi is certainly a seductress. Travis was either someone who hid his true self from his family, friends, past relationships, with the exception of Jodi, or, and I find this to be most likely, he used Jodi for his sexual desires and talked to her as he envisioned her. I think Jodi played the part of the lustful woman in order to adapt to what she felt were his needs in order to cement a permanent relationship. All of which was fantasy on both sides. The lustful Jodi became the scorned Jodi when she learned of his upcoming trip with another woman. I'm not a believer in the death penalty, so I would agree that a life sentence would be appropriate.

As of late, my time is spent working with a local domestic violence shelter and the county prosecutor's victim assistance unit and as stressful as it can be, I love being able to help victims turn their lives around and "move forward". My husband, who specializes in Psychiatry and Neurology, has assisted me immensely providing pro bono services for many referrals who have limited incomes. Despite what the public thinks, many victims in our area do have financial issues since the abusers control the incomes in most cases. I'll be glad when this trial is over. Time for a trip to the Florida Keys with no TV or Radio, just good company and natures music.

What a great combo: psychiatry, neurology and therapist. I also like your description of the mutual fantasies these two had. What a crazy case. I think it is difficult for people to imagine a woman wrecking such havoc on a man. Jodi sure has engendered a lot of hate. I wonder if it is the shock at a woman being so violent.
My mom and I watch the trial together. She has dementia, so every once in a while she exclaims "she SHOT him???" or some other sudden realization. She has always thought everyone on trial for murder is innocent-- OJ, Casey Anthony, Scott Peterson. She always has thought the courts are just out to get people! I quit arguing with her years ago. I retired to take care of my father who eventually died (Alzheimer's)and now my mom has dementia. Sad. But I have turned about half of our yard into a huge garden and I get to walk on the beach every day. I am in Huntington Beach. So when the trial ends I will get back to more weeding and fertilizing and trying to get my mom to walk with me! Thank God I am able to be there for her.
