im 33 year old female, i have the same problem for about 5 years after alcohol and sometimes it happens without it. been to loads of doctors and they put it down to kidney infections. the pain is unreal. can last up to 10 hours without going. can anyone tell me why this happens or what i can do.
Hi Marcy, Any luck finding a solution? Most docs r quacks! I'm in recovery mode since last nites partyn, funny thing is I dint drink all tht much. Bin havin this problem for almost 7 yrs! I just tackle it by goin to loo every 10-15 mins, drink plenty of water.. But if so many suffer mainly after alcohol consumption there has to a plausible explanation n cure.. Do lemme know if there's any medication to ease the torment.

I am 55 and used to drink regularly but I would never say i was a heavy drinker. I now drink a few beers very infrequently and find that I do not pee at all until about midday the following day.
Drinking water helps me feel OK with dehydration, but to hold that quantity of liquid for such a long time without the 'need' to go seems very unusual.
Being a man I have not been to the doctor, don't know why, just do not like to!

I am 35 years old and ever since I gave birth to my twins almost 5 years ago, I have been in daily pain. Every time I urinate or my husband & I have sex. I've been to 2 urologists,3 different gynos, a gyno physical therapist, and about 10 other doctors.(including the one who delivered the twins)No one has helped me and I'm at my wits end! Now, 2 different times in the past 5 months, each time I had 3 alcoholic drinks and would all of a sudden not be able to urinate and have horrible urges. I drank water and would finally be able to unrinate very little and would have relief for about 30 sec. until the next urge and so on until I finally got enough out! One other time, years ago, I went to work the next morning after drinking the night before and ended up not being able to urinate at all and had to drive myself to the hospital and be catherdarized, which took them 5 trys to get one in! This has been daily pain for the past 5 YEARS!!! The doctors have yet to do any x-rays or ultrasounds or anything....

Urinary retention started happening to me about 4 years ago. I couldn't figure out what is was, and why I could't pee the next day after heavy drinking. I had been to the ER several times, and I was even hospitalized once because I had not urinated in 4 days (because my kidneys shut down, since my bladder was backed up). I had several tests, including MRI's and bladder and blood tests, but no one could find the cause of the retention. Needless to say, I kept drinking (like a fool) and whenever it would happen, I would just go to a urologist and pay $175-200 for a catheter (what a waste of money). Lately, I have not have been drinking so heavily so often, but once in a while, I do still binge. I started noticing that It stopped happening once I started eating something before I went to bed (after a nigh of binge drinking). I's now been about 2 years and I have not had any more episodes. Once, after a binge, when I woke up to go and pee, I did have retention, and I remembered that I didn't eat anything before going to bed, so I ate two slices of bread and went back to sleep (praying to God that I didn't have to get another catheter the next day). When I finally woke up again, my bladder was no longer bloated and I was able to pee. Maybe you're just having too much alcohol in your system when you lie down and you need some bread to soak it up. I'm not an expert and I'm not saying this will help you, but it definitely worked for me. The real trick, is to just not drink so much. I am a 38 year old female.

I had this problem for about 3 years so I decided to go to New Hall Hospital in Salisbury.

I was really happy with the service I received here! Their website is http://www.newhallhospital.co.uk/

I am 25 years old and have suffered with water infections & cystitis for 8years, which in my 1st year lead to a kidney infection, I had this take care of though and this has never returned. I am not unable to urinate after drinking alcohol, had this problem for over a year now and it is very annoying and uncomfortable. Was advised over the years to hand in urine tests to my GP and the Urine results kept coming back with blood, protein & white cells in my water. Prescribed with Trimethoprim (antibiotics) on numerous occasions and the problem was solved, but always came back when I was run down/stressed etc. Finally got referred to a Urologist (October 2012) and had a Cystoscopy & a Urethral Dilatation (camera in bladder & stretching of the urine pipe) all done under general anaesthetic. I am urinating a lot more now on weekdays which is brilliant- but not on weekends after alcohol!?(things like vodka, beer, wine, shots etc all affect me) Do any doctors or anyone else have any suggestions on what I should do please to help me urinate more after drinking alcohol?? Thanks..x

Angie I strongly recommend you ask to have a general anaesthetic if you are having a cystoscopy as I found it very painful indeed for a woman!:( I told them I was frightened to go ahead with it and they referred me back and I was put under the G.A - bit painful weeing next day but much less traumer.

Thankyou, Lauren! I'm already very sensitive in that area just by touch....I couldn't imagine how it is going to be with a camera going in there!! Just using the "duck bill" things for pap time makes me cry!! I asked my doctor if they can put me out for this cystoscopy and she told me no. I researched it online and it says that they can! I'm soooo scared to have this done!! How long did yours take?

Well the reason I was knocked completely out because I had my urine pipe stretched which is an operation + the cystoscopy so I had to be knocked out. But if you are frightened they should give you a local anaesthetic and something to atleast make you drowsy to take the edge off it!...I would definately fight to have some sort of anaesthetic, the cystoscopy took approx 3minutes they told me but I had tried having it done last year without any anaesthetic and I hated it, some people can handle it but I thought it was so painful because I couldnt relax and they couldnt get the camera in because I couldnt keep still (it is painful) and as a result of me not relaxing the camera scraped my urethra and it gave me a infection for a few days :( so I would strongly advice some pain relief...hope all goes well x

When you drink a lot the bladder is over filled. When that happens in the male the urethra (tube from the bladder to the head of the penis) lays on it and is stopped. Then you can't pee. You need to the ER where they will be catherized.

I have found that men who hold back their pissing when they are playing cards or adolescents who play on and on in games. After 10 hours, etc. they go to the toilet and can't piss. It is the same that I said before. The urethra is stopped up.

Try cutting out grains, peanuts, eggs, and dairy. If that solves the problem try introducing each of those food groups.

I drank for years and had this problem every time I drank! Even if it was only shots! Sounds like your doc doesn't know what he's talking about!

I'm 70. Already had a TURP, and urination during my waking hours is (mostly) normal. However, I enjoy drinking a couple of beers now and again, but when I do it becomes harder to urinate. It also depends on what brand/type of beer (Corona, IPA, Sam Adams) I consume. Why is this?

I also went through this. I'm a 31 year old male and drink on special occasions a few times a year. I went out for a good knees up last week for our staff christmas party and had got drunk, I couldn't stop peeing all night. Then from 6am onwards I could not get a drop of urine out of me, no matter how hard I tried. Drinking water, a hot bath.. nothing worked until 12 hours later I rang my doctor and explained and was told to go straight to A&E. I was told to drink 3 large jugs of water, this made the problem worse.. I had to wait in A&E from 7pm - 2am until eventually after me begging for help and four attempts with three differnt doctors trying to fit a cathatar they succeeded! Urine and blood everywhere! It was 20 hours in total until my bladder was free of urine. I'm now stuck with this cathatar for two weeks and it's hell! So painful. Apologies for such an in depth story, but I wouldn't want anyone to go through this and would advice people to go to A&E sooner rather than later before it gets unbarable like it did for me. I wouldn't wish this experience on my worst enemy!
