Nasal polyp removal

Hey there fellow stuffies- me: chronic stuffed up allergy like symptoms from everything from alcohol to environment changes. ultimately about 6 months ago started wheezing regularly, coughing miserably, the whole 9 yards.

so went to allergist, discovered I had no allergies at all (pin pricks along my back - good times)... so he referred me to an ENT, who gave me following routine after discovering my big time deviated septum (hanging to my left) and polyps on both sides:

7 days of 6x prednisone pills
7 days of 1x prednisone pills

went back in, polyps shrinking nicely-- so now we've moved to the less intense budesonide. now on day 3 of waterboarding myself with a neti pot 2x per day. QUESTION: my pot came with neilmed sinus rinse. do I put both the budesonide AND the sinus rinse into the 8 oz of water that I shoot up my nose?

Excited about the potential of leaving my stuffed (in the wrong way) days behind!

hi everyone, I had nasal polyps removed a year ago and since then i have not felt any better. I am on and off steroids for a year now. every time i go to the surgeon i am put on antibiotics for sinus infection. the worst part of the whole show is the constant nasal drip. I cough 8 hours straight in a day out of 24 hours. each time i go to the bathroom i cough for an hour straight breaking into sweat and leave the bathroom with barely any energy left in me. i work in the hospital night as a nurse and i think is it affecting my job productivity as i have to stop and go to the bathroom for my coughing episode. no allergy medication has helped. nothing seem to help. my asthma and allergy doc thinks i might need another surgery. Any advise. My life is a living hell.

My daughter will be having surgery Monday to remove nasal polyps. She was told they appear to be abnormal and they are eroding the membrane between the sinus and the brain. The membrane has become very thin and they don't know what is going on. They plan to biopsy the tissue and wait for the results before they continue the surgery. Has anyone ever had any experience with something like this?
I had something like this before. Frontal Sinus Mucocele which grew and pushed through the posterior wall of the frontal sinus against the frontal lobe. It was extradural so I was lucky. It required a craneotomy, removal of the mucocele and an attempted frontal sinus obliteration/grafting the last part of which failed. There were complications at 1 year, 5 years, then 10 years after that all which required 1 or more surgeries to correct. I am now 10 years since the last surgery (series of 3) and some stage 2 polyps have returned. I had 4 ENTs to give me their prognosis and 2 said I need surgery and 2 said I could wait and monitor. Good luck and do have this case treated asap. If you are in USA I do have a referral.

I'm 70 years old
Have had four surgeries on my sinus. One for a cyst and three for polyps.
Most recently was a polyp removal last April as an in-office procedure.
My ENT says that 90% of polyps can be removed in the office. He also
took me off of the steriod nasal sprays that's I've been on for over 10 years,
trying to prevent them. He said that he doesn't see much difference in
people who use the sprays and those who don't.
The in-office procedure is a breeze compared to checking into the hospital
and putting up with the BS and delays and all of the other stuff that goes
with staying there.
The latest polyp appeared last April. He injected it with
a steroid and it shrank about 50%almost immediately. Then he put me on a week
of Prednisone to shrink it some more. Then a week later I went to his
office at 1pm. He injected my nose with a local anesthesia and proceded
to cut the polyp out. No pain at all but sound of the cutting was a little
distracting. A sort of crunching sound. He got it all out in a few min.
Very little bleeding and I was out of the office within 45 min and on my way
home. In Nov I went in for a follow up and he checked and said I was getting
another one and he said it would start to affect my nose breathing in about six months.
He said to come back in that time and he would again take it out in the office.

I had the FESS operation for removal of the polyps that occured in my left sinus in August2010. Polyps came back vigorously within the course of two months, not only to the left side but almost everywhere in my sinuses.
I decided to get alternative therapy- neural therapy. It worked quite well for a while. I was comfortable except the cough. Then cough was taken undercontrol with seretide. Unfortunately about a month ago I lost my sense of smell and taste. Each ENT I saw has been recommending surgery. Am I supposed to have one every year?
There must be another solution.. Lost trust to doctors :((.
I am scared that it will cause more problems if I do 't listen to them.
Has anybody's doctor said that this may be a result of stress?
All the best to everyone.

i just was concerned with this diesease 'Nasal Polyps' and i researched alot over the net., and found out no matter what u do they will come back,
even i used to have polyps, i still have them, but they have decreased to a lesser degree.
everybody shud try this,

find out the cause of allergy or that micro organism which causes this,
in my case i was living in a damp area, where the walls were damp and even some fungus was present there. I used to breathe that stale air all the time, and i believe that it was the main reason behind polyps.
next, go for YOGA,
Google "PRANAYAM" known as Breathing excercises, and excercise daily, i did it for nearly 2 months, and i got back my sense of smell, and even the stuff nose was relieved.:)
carry on with the excercise for 4-5 months, and it will show miracles, TRUST ME
and stay away from cold, it accelerates the process.

Try everything else before surgery. It is easy but.. i had it without questioning it on 5 october 2010. They came back, in three months..
1. Boost your immune system, have lots of probiotic, it is related to our intestines. Just goggle, allergies and intestines, you will be amazed by how related they are. The cleaner the intestines are the stronger our immune system is.
2. Start yoga like tge previous person suggested.
3. Use sinus Rinse
4. Rhonocort aqua seems tobe working better for me interms of steroid nasal sprays. Try it
5. Buy an air cleaner hepa system if it is because of allergies

All the best

Reply to 'Settar':

Regarding Vitamin D3 5,000 IU pills sales, I use a very dependable AND affordable vitamin company out of Fargo, North Dakota, USA ( www.SwansonVitamins.com / 1-800-437-4148)--they sell them for $8.99 for a full 250 softgels!(but, the shipping cost is an additional $4.95 for U.S. residents & $3.99 more to U.S. territories; it doesn't mention how much it'd cost to ship overseas to you in my catalog, though, it at all...??

Hello again,
I would like to ask some questions, if you may help it would be very appreciated:
1) where do you find 5000 iu d vit tablets? I guess they are very hard to find in Turkey, pharmacies generally sell 300.000 capsules.
2) when my polyps are active, i think mostly due to post nasal drip and general sense of my head is completely filled with mucus, i am sometimes having extremely killer headaches that may last for even a week time. Nothing helps to stop those headaches not any pill but only massaging my head with an ice pack would cease it a bit. not even sleeping stops, on some situations i wake up with a terrible headache. So, i am asking if you also have such headaches and do you have any solution for these situations since this becomes my biggest problem i cannot work study or do anything and become a numb, having a mixture of all kinds of headaches such as; migrane, sinus, trauma and any other at the same time :(((
3) what could be the best saline rinse receipt? Do you recommend any ready brand product or a solution i can prepare at home. And how often am i supposed to use that?
4) i am planning to cut dairy products completely to see if they are making me allergic, but how am i supposed to support my system for any probable lack of calcium or protein? Do you think tablets would be an alternative or could naturel selections be the best choice to help to cover the deficiency?
5) in case of dust mite or such allergens threat, do you think an air purifier machine would be helpful, and do they make any harm?
6) when i drink alcohol i feel very itchy and stuffy inside the nose, is there any kind of booze which is not doing this? Especially red wine and every kind of beers are killing me. I dont care if do not drink until the end if my life if i can get rid of those polyps, but just asking.
7) how do you feel like when you realize that you forget to take any kleenex with you while going out? I am terribly sick of these things and am ready to get rid of em.
Lats of thanks in advance for your responses,i will be checking here every possible day for updates.

hi i have been suffering from polyps as well for 4 years. i had 3 operations, after these i have decided to take 10 days of prednisolone pills, 3-4 times max in a year. bcs i dont think the surgery is a cure, it is loss of time and money i think. you have to find out the cause of this allergy.
bytheway i have been taking vit d-3 from GNC products 1000 iu a day. they were miraceluos for the first two months but suddenly they stopped working. now i am taking prednisolone again bcs i cannot smell or taste again. i have tried everything, my next bullet will be helminthic therapy which i have learned from tim from downunder. but it is not possible to apply this cure in my country i think.
hey tim what about your last condition? are those worms still working? update please :)

My husband had his sinus surgery three days ago, and had the splints put in. After excessive bleeding, we ended up back in the Emergency Room that night and the dr had to remove the splints and put in the dissolvable packing. My question is, is this packing suppose to fall out? I know it is dissolvable, but my husband is sitting here with a nice size piece hanging out of his nostril. He has been spraying the saline solution often like the dr says, but we were under the impression it wasn't going to fall out, but rather dissolve. Help Please

hi settar, yes, the hookworm are still working for me.. definitely. And being in Turkey may be helpful.. you aren't far from one worm provider (autoimmunetherapies) who are based in the UK. They do deliver. I'm in australia and have received my packages.

I've now gone 1.5 years since my last operation. I was booked in for an operation mid last year but was able to cancel it because I used hookworm to regulate my immune system. I'm just waiting on my third lot of reinforcements to bring my numbers to about 100 hookworm. I haven't even seen my specialist in about 6 months or so. I haven't taken prednisone since my last surgery.

Anyway, I realised that while the hookworm worked, there were other things going on with me and I wanted even better health with even less use of steroids. So I've done what others in recent posts have suggested.

1st: Weekly Yoga. 2nd: Reduction in exposure to the allergens I know about (moving to a better house with less mould, hepa air filter etc). 3rd: Visiting a genius alternative medicine doctor who diagnosed me as salicylate intolerant and confirmed some allergies.

This 3rd step was vital. You polypers will know that one of the things a specialist will ask you is 'do you have an allergy to aspirin?'. This is because there's a known relationship between polyps and aspirin allergy. Well, aspirin is acetylSALICYLIC acid. They should be asking you how you feel after drinking heaps of wine, or having a very tomatoey pasta with lots of brocolli and zucchini. If you feel queezy or have stomach issues or bloating etc then you may be intolerant to salicylates (which are a natural preservative). By eating this stuff you may be making your polyps worse. So people that go on a fruit/vegie diet may find themselves getting worse. General Doctors can't test for salicylate intolerance.. but my alternative doctor could (I knew it already, but was in serious denial.. hoping I wasn't intolerant). For further info, please google the term.

Consider other allergens. I'm guessing polypers are generally allergic to mould, dustmite and sometimes shellfish. Mould is what I really think flared my polyps up.

Anyway, my alternative doctor gave me some special immunetherapy medications, I'm taking these and down to just one steroid spray in each nostril and one puff of seretide each day. I can still breath through both nostrils fine. However, I still have the disease present.. it's not a cure. But I'm confident I'll never have surgery or prednisone again.
And now when I go running my lungs and nose feel free.. I run longer and better than ever. I feel young again.

(p.s. those of you on seretide.. please try breathing this VERY deeply in using a spacer, hold for 15 seconds, slowly release it.. rinse mouth out. If you are going to take this awful stuff then at least get it right =p)

i had mine done 18 months ago,now im on the waiting list again.but for the last 3 opperations they have used sponges up my nose not splints, and the next day they take the sponges out and there is bleeding for a few hours.then it stops unless i blpw my nose.

does any one think smoking can cause nasal polyps.ismoke 5 hamlet cigars on a friday night.just wondered if it could be the cigar smoke causing these polyps.

Since: Jan 12

hi bob,

no, cigars are generally not the cause of polyps.

however in your case they may have cause your dormant polyps to flare up (assuming your nasal cavaties had an acute immune response to the smoke).

my polyps were silent for many years until i cleaned out a vacuum cleaner full of mould.. which is when everything went down hill.

I'm sure that polyps are caused by an immune response to a perceived threat. I'm sure the best way to treat them is to remove contact with allergens or food intolerances and use probiotics (such as helminths) to alter the immune system.
