Like a lot of great ideas, this one has already been deployed. Most jurisdictions in the area already have both ALS (Advanced Life Support) ambulances staffed by paramedics and BLS (Basic Life Support) ambulances staffed by EMTs. In many cases, BLS ambulances can be immediately upgraded to ALS when a medic climbs on board with his/her jump bag. Additionally, at least in Montgomery County, all firefighters are at least EMTs and many are also medics.

Not necessarily directed at the writer: Maryland went 40 years without a fatal chopper crash and many lives were saved. Per patient transport mile, choppers are still by far the best (and safest) option when transported trauma patients to bypass heavy traffic or other circumstances that would significantly delay getting a patien to a trauma center. We should be applauding the experts who have developed and promoted this system and we should defer to the expertise of those who either know about the operation or who will at least take the time to learn something about it before they decide they know better.
