"There is alarming evidence accumulated by serious scientific sources that the US Government is about to or already has ‘weaponized’ Avian Flu. If the reports are accurate, this could unleash a new pandemic on the planet that could be more devastating than the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic which killed an estimated 30 million people worldwide before it eventually died out. Bill Mindell, director of clinical services for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, explained that not all children symptomatic for H1N1 are tested with nasal swabs that are analyzed for the virus in labs.

Only two to four children per camp are tested and if their results come back positive then other children who are symptomatic are diagnosed through clinical assessments of their symptoms by nurses and doctors.

This is standard practice when there are outbreaks of bugs in long-term care settings and other institutions, he explained.

The province has reduced the amount of lab testing it is doing for the virus and is monitoring instead through the input of "sentinel practitioners" who are reporting back what they see in their practices.
