have this child tested for autism immediately. my daughter was 15 months old and knew her entire alphabet, capital and lowercase letters, was able to read "Fox in Sox" and read the labels of her favorite foods. she was diagnosed autistic at 2 years of age. in autism, it's known as "hyperlexia" and it's a fascination with letters (but can apply to numbers as well.) While it would be fantastic to assume this 17 month old is just ahead of her peers, I would be interested in her other behaviours, such as-does she make eye contact? point to what she wants? address her parents by "Mommy" and "Daddy?"

My 11 month old solved the Rubix Cube last week. Some kids are just smart. I'm not going to write a story on it.

The mother of this little girl was a friend of mine in high school and I'd like to offer some reassurance to those of you who think these parents are not allowing their child to be a kid. Her mother was one of the hardest working, focused, determined people I have ever known. She is also one of the kindest, gentlest, warm-hearted people you could know. The amazing ability of this little girl is undoubtedly a gift from God and the result of attentive loving parenting-NOT pressure to perform!!

If all parents focused a bit more on literacy, I wouldn't be teaching those same basic words to my 8th grade students.

i'm not real sure this was necessary. but i guess some people are so low on self-esteem they have to say something to make themselves feel good.

I am not impressed as children easly associate words the same as pictures. For example my 23 month old can identify about 20 words including verbs and adjectives. Granted he is 6 months older, he has been at it for at least 3-4 months. I am sure he is not reading the words, but more or less seeing the word spelled out and saying what he thinks it is. Basically associating the font to the word as a noun.IE: he would say apple when he see's an apple, associating the picture with the word. He has no clue what an "incredible" is, he is just associating the font as a picture and using his vocabulary to name it.
