On Stanislaw Burzynski, "antineoplastons," and cancer cure scams

Nov 11, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Boing Boing

I've just finished Unnatural Habitats, the fifth collection of Jeff Lemire's apocalyptic Sweet Tooth comics, and I continue to be absolutely taken by it, on the grimmest of tenterhooks for the next volume.

To those who criticize Burzinski and antineoplaston therapy, do you have any personal experience? I was dx'ed with multiple myeloma 2/94, underwent several years of conventional therapies including a peripheral blood stem cell transplant, relapsed twice and was told that "nothing more can be done for you." I began ANP 11/97, achieved complete remission by 4/99 and have remained cancer free ever since.

By your own admission, Burzynski gave you chemotherapy. It's known that he mixes his ANP with conventional treatments.

There remains no good evidence that ANPs are good at treating cancer. That's why Burzynski keeps running dozens of Phase II trials but never publishes their results. It's the only way he can get away with making big bucks with a procedure that isn't known to work.

Not true. The FDA doesn't allow ANP to be mixed with anything else. That is the purpose of a clinical trial. It can't be mixed with anything. Anyone who says ANP is mixed with Chemo hasn't eh slightest clue as to what they are talking about.

I shouldn't have used the word 'mixes'. Burzynski does sell chemotherapy at his clinic in addition to the ANP therapy.

Can we stop pretending that the ANP are for the purposes of clinical trials though? It's a money-making scheme.
