Lung cancer due to asbestos

Hi! I am writing a story and one of the characters is going to die. I thought of lung cancer, whose symptoms are very weak until it's in stage 4. And the story goes like; she is having a normal meal one night and suddenly starts coughing up irrepressibly. Blood is present in her sputum. She is then administered to a hospital. By the way story takes place in 80's in Turkey, and in a place where asbestos use is present. Doctor says due to combination of smoking and prolonged exposure to asbestos in plumbing and on walls, she is now in cancer stage four. She had been living in that asbestos riddled apartment for 5 years. Is this accurate so far? Any shortcomings? I have also added the information that she lost some weight and she was a bit pale on the last couple of weeks. Now back to my original question: At this stage, how preventable is the disease, bearing in mind that it was the 80's. What were the then present forms of preventive medicine? Will it kill in two weeks' time or will it take much more than that. Also can you describe what will take place after she was administered to the hospital? What are the steps? What do the doctors do to diagnose, and then what steps do they take to prevent. Was radiotherapy and chemotherapy present in the 80's? I have been searching the internet for these things but little things, details like the process after admin can not be found on the internet. I don't want to miss out any stage. And if you think of anything else besides my questions that will help me, please do add them. Cheers.
