I guess the old adage is true: "Laughter IS the best medicine!"

There's no evidence that laughter will cure you, but if you're seriously ill or living with the possibility that a serious illness may come back, laughter can help keep your life centers.

However, I don't think it's as easy as swapping jokes once a month (and I know at least one person who is offended by risque' jokes). I believe that you have to have laughter occurring naturally in your daily life. You laugh at a funny thing a child said, or some goofy thing your dog did.

But if you can't even laugh at clearly funny jokes, that's a person who needs some counseling to learn how to live with the reality of the presence or credible threat of a very serious illness. The truth is that we are all going to die some day. We all have a terminal illness -- that of being alive. If you are alive, you will die some day. I think it's important to live in the moment part of the time, let go of the fears long enough to have a good belly laugh.

If you can't do that, I don't think a "joke group" will be the answer. That person needs some counseling to figure out how to live their daily life in a happier way.
