How do I know if a doctor is being thorough during the pelvic exam?

My last exam I had a female doctor who was nice, however she just seemed to rush through it and was done in a few minutes.

When I was younger I had a male doctor who was also very nice, however before the breast exam he had me drop my gown to my waist and hold my hands above my head for a minute or two, and during the pelvic exam he thoroughly looked at the outside of my vagina for several minutes before he did the pap smear.

Was there anything wrong with either exam? I want the exam to be over with quickly, but I also want to make sure the Dr is thorough and doesn't miss anything. Do most Drs just rush through it, or do most Drs take their time? Are they more thorough if you haven't been in a while? Are they more likely to rush through it if you are older/married? I haven't been in a while, and I just wanted to know what to expect when I go the next time.

Next time your do, get a second opinion and see another woman obgyn. I'll bet she's quick also. Most of the exam bi manual, etc. have low/no yield. The woman docs know this and have to have the same exam. The male docs should know this too, but dont have to get the same exam.

A woman does not need a pelvic exam fof b.c., though most male doctors make the woman submit to their demand during their visit. Woman doctors dont. They ask if you smoke and check your b.p., thats it. So, what do you think?

Jenn12, you'll know if it's thorough, if it is a male gynae you go to you will probably be stuck in that most undignified position for a great deal longer than you expected to and you'll walk funny on the way back to your car in tha car-park, however, you'll be non the wiser as to your well being as you were before you arrived, unless you are attending for a specific problem which doesn't sounf likely from your posting!!!

Jenn12, I agree with the previous post with the only exception being Judy suggesting another doctor, but she is right on the bi-manual being low/no yield. It's a worthless exam. The only reason they still to it is because this 'science' of degradation has made no progress in the last 50 years. Oh! Excuse me.....yes it did....the CSA-125 blood test which is infinitely more accurate than pap, non-invasive, an there's no degrading exam. It's also a roadblock to male gyn's avenue of gratification.

It took a very long time before I could understand how any woman could go through with this exam, ESPECIALLY with a male attending. Women do not/can not seem to accept that this is a very intimate sexual exam because for women love or at least affection has to be involved before it can become sexual (for them). Males, on the other hand do NOT need the love or affection element for it to be sexual !! We (males) are VISUAL animals. We like seeing things that arouse us. Take my word for it, that lithomy (not sure on that spelling) position with a naked female will take any male that has the testosterone hormone in his blood from zero to GO is less time it takes you to sneeze.

If you are asymptomatic (no problems) why do you feel a need for this?

I have a link for you. I hope it helps you make a good informed decision. My best wishes are with you.

One more thing.......the more often you do these exams, the more often you make yourself susceptible to various problems, i.e. infection from either a poorly sterilized instrument (most common is that damn speculum) or even airborne bacteria in the exam room from a previous patient. You want to get checked? Buy a vaginal speculum on ebay, have your partner thourghly wash his/her hands before dipping the speculum and hands in alcohol. Allow alcohol to air dry, insert speculum, and just do a visual check for anything that seems 'off color'. Pink or red is fine. Yellow, brown, green, or small white pimples indicate a problem. If that's observed THEN you might need a doc, but PLEASE choose a female unless you want to be in that vile, degrading position for a long time while Dr John gets his jollies at your expense.

I need to correct first line. It should have said:
"Jenn12, I agree with the previous postS (plural)

I also need to add that the female doesn't have to be totally naked for a male to go from zero to GO. Even with sheets covering your legs and torso (draping) if the crotch is exposed that is much more than enough.

aRE YOU GIRLS STUPID OR WHAT? I CAN UNDERSTAND THE ADVICE ON SEEING A WOMAN GYN - BUT THINK THE MALE BASHING IS WAY OVER THE TOP!!!!! I DON'T FOR A MINUTE BELIEVE MALE DOCTORS ARE GETTING THEIR JOLLIES FROM THESE EXAMS. ALSO - A THOROUGH EXAM IS NECESSARY & IMPORTANT - A QUICKIE LOOK IS LACKING MEDICAL INTEGRITY - REALLY CONCERNED BY THESE RESPONSE. IMMATURE AND IGNORANT.

Just
resort to name calling and it will all go away HA. I dont think so. 20 + yrs ago when i was immature and ignorant i thought it was o.k. for men to examin woman (then again i thought it was ok to leave young boys w/priest) know that i'm mature and have educted myself in what is done during these exams and how many doctors have sexually assaulted their female patients , i think it would be a very, very bad idea for a woman to go to a male gyn. This is from a man who's wife was sexually assaulted by a male doctor. Once it happens you can never take it back, you can prevent it from happening to you.

Yes your right. In our situation my wife was using a female as an ob/gyn, this was a male G.P. You've been warned, i wish we had been.

When he thoroughly looked at your vulva , that was for his pleasure only. Go to youtube, you'll see how one is suppose to be done. None of the docs on utube are looking at a vulva for several minutes. Check it out you'll have your answer.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO GOOGLE "CONVICTED GYNECOLOGISTS"!
REGARDING "A THOROUGH EXAM IS NECESSARY & IMPORTANT", ONE QUESTION:
WHY?
BEFORE ANSWERING, YOU MIGHT WANT TO GOOGLE "DR. ANGELA RAFFLE"

Once again it can be seen that woman ob/gyn's are doing it differantly then men. Ladies, if you want a fair honest exam you have to see a woman.

In this case, if you have problems with the result, you better get a second opinion from another doctor. http://www.vaginalmeshlawsuit.com/vaginal-mes...

You must be an idiot or a GP/gyn

research similar threads here on topix before you call us all immature and ignorant....check out my own testimony of medical abuse at the GPs office in the UK in the 1980s during a bogus pregnancy test, check out other womens testimonies, court cases, convictions and husbands testimonies......

You my friend are seriously challenged

And if you are not a woman - you have no idea what u risk loosing at the Dr office so stfu!!!
