So, who owns the dog? I would love to do this at my father's facility, but I don't know who owns the dog? Do I adopt him? And then give him to the facility? This is a great idea!~

What an amazing story. I applaud the staff at the Bridgeport shelter and all the shelters for that matter they do a wonderful job with these animals. Oh yeah and the wonderful volunteers too!

Bpt Animal Control told them the last dog they adopted to them was great too and it bit a 9 year old. Expect a lawsuit BAC. Adopting a dog from BAC is russian roulette. Stupid people.
i don't think RC was cooped up long enough to develop that syndrome they get when caged too long...it's a nice story, just shows what love and understanding can do for a neglected dog/cat and/or PERSON!

why are you so negative? because of 1 incident, you think ALL dogs being adopted out by the shelter will do the same?

Fred - I'm sorry that you seem so negative about the BAC staff -- They have been nothing but professional and honest. Maybe part of the last dog, which I know nothing about, was that he/she was picked incorrectly. Having two therapy dogs myself and being Delta certified with these dogs, I knew what I was looking for in evaluating the pet chosen. Just one factor of this choice was what the wonderful AC people had to say about him.
Follow up is also important. I visit RC often to check on him and his stress level (always LOW). He has a space to retire to if he needs to escape and a yard to run in to blow off steam (and a pal to run with).
I'm sorry the first experience was negative. This one has been wonderful.

One more thing....
There are MANY wonderful rescue groups that have many wonderful dogs. If we hadn't found a dog at Bridgeport Animal Control we would have kept searching for just the right dog. We had already looked at Stamford Animal Control (also a wonderful facility), and Westport Animal Control (not the Humane Society) before we ended up in Bridgeport.

The bottom line here -- there are many wonderful, needy, dogs in our area shelters. Everyone who is looking to add to their canine family should shop the shelters and rescues and NOT THE PET STORES.

Therapy dogs! what a great idea. Marcy, how does one become Delta certified and do you know who I should talk to in Woodbury to get involved? I live in woodbury and love dogs, I would like very much to do what you do in Woodbury. Do you know who runs the therapy program at Woodbury, who I should talk to? Do I get to take the dog home or does it stay there all the time?

You need to find a class in your area - contact The Delta Society ( www.deltasociety.org ). The two therapy dogs are my personal dogs. RC is not certified (though I may take him to classes to get him certified). You need to have a dog you know well (have owned for over a year) and who has the personality to be able to do the job.

RC is just an outstanding animal.

Anyone looking for a dog, go to Trumbull. The staff and volunteers are educated, well trained, and the ACO is a certified trainer. To go anywhere else is just plain silly. Marcy, you knew what you were looking for and have the training to do so on your own. Joe Public does not. A Shelter pet is a great idea, but from reputable shelters that are staffed with people who know what they are doing and not people learning as they go. Bridgeport is the only place that hired a staff with virtually no education, prior experience working with dogs and nothing in the way of training skills - it isn't their fault, but it is their circumstance. Everyone at Trumbull has 15 years or more of experience and errors are virtually omitted. Trumbull's pets are all sterilized prior to adoption to eliminate the number of unwanted pets. Bridgeport is doing nothing but contributing to the problem, puppies, cats and kittens are everywhere again and were hard to find only a few years ago when the shelter did have a sterilization program which the City stopped because the residents wanted pets that were able to make more pets. Good going Bridgeport! keep up the good work! It is so obvious you care so much! Good grief. By the way, New Have, Stratford, Fairfield and Hartford are all better - if Trumbull is not convenient, go there. You have a better chance of getting a great shelter pet that is the right pet for you and your family.

It's a great idea, but what training do these dogs go through before they are placed in an institution as a therapy dog?
