This whole thing started back in January. I had bronchitis and a mild ear infection and a dr put me on a Zpack, then I got a bad ear infection and a dr put me on Augmentin, and a couple weeks later I had a bad throat infection, and my dr put me on Levaquin. Within a week of taking Levaquin, I started to have horrible stomach cramps and diarrhea.
I went back to my primary care doctor and she put me on Flagyl 2x day x7 days and I was getting better. A few days later, the symptoms came back and the dr put me on Flagly 3x day x14 days. I was only able to tolerate 7 days worth of the medicine (had horrible nausea-numbness/tingling-stoma ch pains). It landed me in the ER because I was so dehyrdated (had to fill me up with 3 L of fluids). The ER dr told me to stop taking Flagyl, and within a couple days I felt better. I did a repeat stool sample and it actually came out negative!
However, 5 days after I stopped the Flagyl, the symptoms came right back and now I am planning on doing a repeat stool sample and then it looks like my GI dr might recommend Vancomycin (sp?)--
Does this vanco antibiotic work?!?! Will it cure this awful disease?!? Are the side effects as bad as the Flagyl side effects?!? PLEASE, ANY INFO WOULD BE HELPFUL!!!:o)

Unfortunately I am on 3 round of C.diff since early Dec. 2010. I lost 70 pounds in 5 mos. Flagyl didn't work for me. 2 times gave me cellulitis in left foot Dr. wanted to give me Flagyl again, I refused & went to new Dr. On to Vancomycin in March 2011.$350.00 every 2 weeks. Couldn't afford it. Local hosp. foot the bill. On it for 3 months. Tested negative. Diarreha again in mid Dec 2011. Vanco again. Stool test was negative. Started diarreha again in early March this year. Gastrionologist said to use Metamucil. Went to new Primary care Dr. & stool was positive. I've lost almost 1/2 my weight now. Am now looking at possible having a new procedure called "stool transplant". It is done by have a family/spouse stool injected into the colon. The donor stool has to have numerous tests. When you have C.Diff, stay away from these foods: NO sugar, NO dairy of any kind, NO caffiene of any kind, NO carbonated drinks, NO fried foods, NO red meat, and no spicy foods. If I can even eat, that leaves me with Ramen noodles, saltine crackers, baked fish, baked potato PLAIN, Decaf coffee with no cream, decaf tea with no sugar and Crystal light lemonade. I am also taking 15 billion mgs of Probiotics a day. Every time you have a bowel movement, flush toilet, use spray bottle with 1/2 water and 1/2 bleach, clean every inch of the toilet, floor, anything near the toilet. Also, be sure to wash your hands with soap and water every single time. The spores can go go anywhere. If you have diarreha again, don't assume it is a "flu bug". If you have it for more than 3-5 days, get tested for C.Diff. Hope you were able to get some help with this disease. About 20% of the population will have a recurrance. Good luck!

I might add that here in NM, Vanco for 1 monts (compound/liquid) is $200. and my drug Ins. won't cover it.
