Can't believe I'm talking about this but... Late last year I came down with a fever accompanied by diarrhea. The fever passed and I stopped having constant diarrhea after 2 days. What followed were 2 of the worst months of my life every morning around 4:00 to 5:30 I would wake up with the worst gurgling in my stomach and have small thin ribbon-like diarrhea with a foul odor, usually at least 2-3 sessions in an hour. The rest of the day I just had excessive stomach growling and discomfort, but no diarrhea (even felt a bit constipated). Multiple trips to the family physician included stool samples, occult blood tests, & a CT scan, which all came back with nothing. I then scheduled a colonoscopy, the prep was horrible and the test came back negative, but afterwards the daily diarrhea I suffered was gone and stayed gone for 7 months!!! I can only think it was the test prep of flushing my system that somehow worked.

Two weeks ago, for the first time in 7 months I had a bout of diarrhea, which led to what appears to be a relapse of whatever I had before. Chronic morning diarrhea has started again in the exact same pattern. I went to the doctor again and he suggested the system flush (same as colonoscopy prep), which I tried again, but it didn't work this time. He suggested before putting me through the series of tests again this year that I try CIPRO, for "a random shot a knocking out the problem." I'm hesitant to try this because everything I read is that it is an aggressive antibiotic that has a high incidence of causing c-diffe, which I had for a month after taking Ceftin 7 or 8 years ago.

Other than this problem I am a very healthy active 30yr old male with no other history of health problems. This problem is having a negative impact on my career and life. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Have him check you for Celiac disease. It is an alergy to wheat, barley, oats, etc. Most doctors do not check this out.

Have you tried Irritable bowel syndrome put out by Advantage. You can get it at Wal-Mart or a drug store.

ARC,

Have you experienced any relief? Just wondering, since I've been experiencing excessive stomach growling and stomach discomfort with it being more pronounced in the morning, but no diarrhea.

To the morning diarrhea person, I am a 32 year old female who has been suffering from morning diarrhea for 16 month now. After seeing my regular doc, then being sent to a GI doc, I have no answers. I have however seen a natural medicine doc and was told our "condition" has a name. It is: cock's crow diarrhea.(google it) I was given hydrochloric acid to take with meals. It is too soon to tell if the protocol will work, but I HIGHLY recommend seeing a natural med doc specifically someone who specializes in chinese medicine. It is such a different kind of experience. Did I mention that I have been having symptoms for 16 months? I have had 3 MRIs, 2 CT scans, colonoscopy, 2 endoscopies, small bowel follow through, hida scan, blood, urine and stool tests etc. My last appointment with my GI, I was told maybe I should start taking anti-depressants. I am not opposed to taking these drugs, but it was clear to me she was done trying to diagnose my problem. My first appointment with the natural medicine doc lasted 1.5 hours and I left with a diagnosis. Try one out!

The first line of checking for celiac is easy - a blood test for tissue transglutaminase - tTG. If high, the diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy of the small bowel. The est. incidence in the US is 1/133, but is being diagnosis as 1/1000+, usually missed "diagnosed" as IBS. The treatment is a completely gluten free diet (No wheat, rye, barley or any derivatives). Anemia is very common with this disorder.

By the way, dental enamel defects are not uncommon in Celiacs. The defect does not weaken the teeth, but does make white and yellow patches or lines on the teeth.

I have the same symptoms as most people here. I usually feel okay during the day aside from feeling a little bloated and constipated. As soon as I wake up in the morning I have a gurglins stomach, pass gas, and then have to go to the bathroom where I have diarrhea. This has been going on for almost a year, but has been more prominant recently. I took acidopholis supplements for a few weeks and they seemed to work and then I noticed they seemed to make the symptoms work. I'm frusterated/depressed/ and scared about what this might be.
I have not gone to the doctor yet but I am going to try a gluten free diet for a week to see if I notice any changes.

By chance, has anyone with chronic morning diarrhea had a HIDA scan to test your gallbladder ejection fraction? I had chronic, morning diarrhea for 3-4 weeks and still have a large morning bms (rarely diarrhea), usually following severe cramping, almost a year later. I've also had a tugging sensation under my right rib cage. The HIDA scan showed that my gallbladder is functioning less than 20%.

Hi all,
I have been having morning diarrhea for over 2 weeks now. I am a female, 32, and 6 months ago I had a 6cm cyst which cause lower left absominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea. The cyst is now down to 1cm and the pain remains but they are telling me it is GI related. I had a cat scan done and it was negative. I started taking bentyl 2 days ago, and got black stools. The doctor told me that was not from teh medication, and told me to go to the ER where I spent all of a yesterday. They found nothing. I am now scheduled for a colonoscopy on April 2nd and I am scared to death I have cancer. I have lower back pain too that used to get better with going to the chiropractor but that no longer helps. What is worse, though, is this non-stop AM diarrhea now that makes me so tired. Any ideas? Does this sound like cock;s crow diarrhea?

I have had this same problem for a few months straight now. I'm a 16 year old female and this is really taking about 2 hours total off of my life every day, causing me to rush around and almost be late for my morning activities. I've gone to the doctor multiple times and they always tell me I could be lactose intolerant, or could be allergic to some other food, and that there is nothing they can do for me. Is this true?

I am a 35 year old female. I have had chronic morning diahrrea for the past 2 1/2 years. Ever since having my daughter, I have had this problem. I have been to a GI and he did HIDA scan, stool sample, bloodwork for celiac disease and all was normal. I did find out I am lactose intolerant, but even cutting dairy out of my diet isn't helping totally so I am thinking it must be something else. I have not had a colonoscopy yet and am scared to. I have been thinking about a naturalist as well. Any thoughts?

I am reading everyone's experiences and they are very similar to mine.
I'm a 37 year old female. For just over 3 wks. I've been waking up every morning about 2 hrs. before the alarm and having stomach cramps, then I have a BM, which is always very soft, and then nausea. Not sure whether I need to throw up or move my bowels.
Over the course of the next two hours or so it just gets worse. Lots of stomach gurgling and some gas. The gas and gurgling happen all day, the bowel evacuation and nausea does not. Actually, I have been noticing the nausea may show up later in the day but is usually fleeting. The stools are soft and getting softer, sometimes very watery. Lighter yellowish-brown as opposed to dark stool, with no visible blood. Dry heaving but no vomiting.
My doctor is sending me for a blood test for celiac disease. If that's negative, he has made it clear that the only logical answer would then be IBS. We have not done a stool sample.
I have eliminated dairy from my diet. Not sure if this is related, but three months ago I quit smoking and drinking coffee - both were daily habits.
I've been noticing pain in my lower left abdomen as well as low lying pain in the left side of my back.
In the morning, once this starts, I find it hard to calm down - trying to get back to sleep, the pain and cramps and nausea make me anxious, I cry and shake, the anxiety gives me stressful thoughts, which makes me go back to the bathroom and try to throw up.
It's been almost a month now and I am a small business owner. I feel like I am losing my mind.
If anyone can give me a short list of what this sounds like, that would be greatly appreciated. My quality of life is diminishing and I am fearing for my livelihood. Thank you in advance.

I am a 35 yr old male, with similar symptoms. I have been having morning diarrhea for atleast 2 months now. I have been to the ER and Dr office for tests (blood,stool,u/s, and CT) and have all been coming back negative! It wakes me up at 5am and I have some stomach cramping and then the BM happens (darrhea). Next the cramping and pain worsens for sometimes as long as 3 hours. It eventually passes and then I feel fine in the PM. The BM in the evening is typically normal with no cramping.

I have been plagued with this problem for a long, long time. sometimes worse than at other times. In soul searching, I drink a quart and a half of coffee in the morning, take a blood pressure pill washed down with two or three miller lights in the evening, eat fried foods and use artificial sweetener in the coffee. The blue stuff.
I've stopped wondering why I have morning gas and water.
To my regimen now I get up and take two Immodium with my first coffee. In a half hour Im good to go.
I dont have any idea how such a tiny pill does it but it just stops it in its tracks. I hope this helps

I've had this for a good 6 months. I was going 3-5 day, always watery. I've been on anti deps and it's decreased to 2 a day, but alwaays in the morning. I get an intense pain and sometime I really can't get off the toilet. Occasionally I get a formed stool. I had some weird intolerancce test that showed up gluten, but cutting it out made no difference and I lost more off my 7 1/2 stone frame (i'm 5'4''). Milk may possibly be a problem too. I had one accupuncture session and wow! so I'm saving for a course of 6-8, but that'll be about 200!

Okay, so the stool sample was negative, next stop is a barium enema. I am suffering from sleep deprivation now as I wake every morning at around 6 am. My skin isn't looking too good. I've been trying to stay hydrated, Powerade helps with that. I wish I could get back to sleep in the mornings, because I find I'm spending my days in a bit of a mental fog. A lot of people are still saying it sounds like a parasite and that I should have two more stool samples to rule it out.
It's been over two months now with this and I am coming to the end of my rope.

All this sounds very familiar. I have been dealing with morning diarrhea for the past 5 years. Healthy 27 year old male.
I have extreme urgency in the morning that leaves me out of all morning activities. Throughout the day, I typically get better little by little. At night, I pretty much feel like normal and can do things. Although, often times my mind is still playing the "where is the closest toilet game" even though I am usually just fine at this time of day. I have been through all of the treatments, GI docs, colonoscopies, fiber, acidophilous, hypnosis, meds, Naturapathic docs, stool tests, celiac tests, acupuncture, you name it. But, I am not giving up hope. There has to be a way to fix this problem.
