I am having the same exact problem..what is going on? Have you found anything that helps you? I am also so depressed about this.

For about eight years i have been having a dull sensation in my upper left quadrant. I realize that it gets worse if i do not eat for a period of time. I actually build up gas. I had ct scans and they came back normal. I'm thinking that this may be a mechanical problem that causes this constant sensation. My sensation tends to move. Sometimes right under my left ribs closer to the solar plexus,(which is most of the time) or further down in my lower left quadrant. I plan on getting a colonoscopy.

not sure if this is still an active page but will try it. I have discomfort, not pain, usually in the upper left rib cage area. Sometimes it feels like my rib is going into my skin. I have been very overweight for 5 years now and I sit all day with very little movement. The discomfort gets worse about 24 hours after I eat milk products, onions, etc. And the discomfort comes and goes.
it is not always the same feeling. The other thing about me is, and please don't be judgemental, but I'm petrified to go to doctors. The stress of getting tests, and waiting for the results gives me a nervous breakdown. Is discomfort a scary as pain?

Hi everyone, diagnosed with acid reflux and hiatal hernia in 2008 also had gallbladder removed that year was doing okay until the week of christmas 2010 when I pinched a nerve in my lower back and was given prednisone for inflammation during that time started having severe chest pain that was mainly under the ribs on the left side and in the upper back had an upper endoscopy diagnosed with gastritis am now taking 120mg of dexalant and 60mg of bentyl has helped but still have left rib pain and upper back pain that comes and goes throughout the day when i had a blood test done lipase was at 65 (60 is normal lab value) dr sent me for catscan with contrast it was normal retook blood test 3 weeks later it was normal last week had blood draw again lipase at 74 dr wasnt concerned but sent me for a mrcp to rule out chronic pancreatitis test came back normal. Just wondering if anyone else has had lipase levels that are slightly off and has a reason for it. I am a 47 year old female.

Check for gluten allergy...it is a simple blood test but you have to request it. Gluten causes all kinds of symptoms but is highly overlooked and misdiagnosed. It causes all sorts of "unknown origin" problems including pain under the ribcage. Hope this message can change someone's life for the better. Discovering gluten allergies literally changed my life :)

I would be interested to know how many of you with the pain under the left side ribcage sit in front of a computer all day?? I have had this problem for a couple of years, all test results come back negative and the only relief I get when it starts is to lie completely flat on my back. Also, if I put on a few extra pounds this seems to aggrevate the issue. Posture could be the underlying problem. Just an idea.

Ok i have been having the same symptoms for about 4 days. It doesn't really hurt when I'm just sitting down or when i flex, but when walk or move I have lots of pain in my upper left abdomen under the rib cage. I figured it was a strained abdomen or something but after reading all you guys had to say it's kind of freaking me out a little bit. Are these how the symptoms started for you guys? and then worsened? Let me know please. I'm an 18 year old male in good shape that doesn't have an ounce of fat on me. Thanks.

I have the same pain. I can't believe so many people have this. My pain is on the left side just below the rib. There is a oblong bump where the pain is. The pain is not constant. Seems to be worse when sitting. I've had this for over 3 yrs now. I seen a doctor 2 yrs ago. Cat scan was normal. He told me to see a chiropractor.More then likely it is a nerve in my back sending pain around to my side. Haven't yet but I think I'm going to give it a try.

i had the same pain for years (i also ha e crohns disease ) so they always assumed it was a flare. this was sooooo different than a crohns flare bc it was under my ribs on left side (my crohns always flares on lrq) i was finally dignosed with 'SOD' sphcincter of oddi dysfunction and pancreatitis. sometimes your gall bladder can give u pain under ur ribs and back too. if all tests come back neg..and ur still having pain...get a SECOND & THIRD opinion until your heard! it took YEARS of me seeing soooo many drs.specialists, tests,er trips to get too the root of my pain. just dont give up! your the only one who knows when there is a problem in ur own body! hope this helps.

Uhm the iliposoas muscle is in your hip and wouldn't cause pain in your rib cage. You might have weak abs, but you still have them and they won't cause rib cage problems. I think you've been duped about your treatment and the improvement is due to your condition improving on its own or the chiropractor accidentally helped you.Chiropractors medicine has a limited scope of applications--mainly certain types of lower back injury. Research has proven in ineffective for other conditions.
You might want to look up the origin of the Psoas muscle. The Iliopsoas is a common name for both the iliacus and the psoas muscle because they blend together going towards a common insertion. This could actually be the cause of her problems. Just for educational purposes you should look up fascia planes as well. Our body is one unique intricately connected organism not just parts. For example the appendix is on the right side but often pain will be felt if a person pushes on the left due to irritation of the peritoneum on the right. Also there is a lot of conflicting research with chiropractic and many of the studies that advocate and disprove are terrible. There are many well trained and excellent chiropractors but sadly many bad ones as well. Too many people jump onto the hasty generalization band wagon and think the world is simply black or white when the variability is astounding. There is a place for manipulative medicine it just needs better research regarding its specific applications. I am not commenting here to argue ...just making a quick statement with hopes that others will think a bit before discounting an entire profession that many people have been helped by...myself included.

Hello all. There are numerous causes to this problem and, in this forum, everyone seems to be asking for help or presenting their problem but failing to give a diagnosis. So, what's causing this (most likely)? Gas! Believe it or not. Gas is the number one factor leading to abdominal discomfort in the upper abdominal quadrant and can radiate pain in the proximity areas. I say this in theory however, since it could be due to overtaxing your body's filtering system. "Do you drink pop or alcohol?" Have u recently taken a ph supplement or are currently on medications? Do u drink 'harsh' energy drinks loaded with sugar and excessive carbonation? IF so, you may be experiencing gall stones (esp if this pain is long lasting). If so, look into something called Uva Ursi. It can even help with UTI's and kidney problems/renal failure-onset. Hope this helps. Any questions?
