Dull pain in upper abdominal region. Started in centre (between rib cage) then moved slightly to my left under the left ribcage. Bottom left rib is slightly tender to touch. Also get twinges lower down in my abdomen (around belly button) and also feels tight around that area.
Been coming and going for 2 years and latest bout has hung around for 5 days.
I am male, approaching 40, have been to the Doctor, had scans and colonoscopies and all are Normal. SO WHAT IS THIS PAIN?

Ive had the same problem. A dull pain under the left rib. Its feels like it is full sometimes and then sometimes it herts. I got diagnosed that i have a inlarged ovary, but I dont know that could be causing it. I guess when you have a cyst on ur ovary it can cause the pain. Does anyone have this problem?

I have been getting similar pain on my left sided lower rib. It just feels tender to touch and sometimes when it is really bad it also hurts in my left arm pit.

It normally accompanies lots of burping and stomach gurgling.

All doctors says is IBS and cant really help but its certainly is getting me down. Lots of people all seem to be saying similar symptoms but no real diagnosis what it could be

I have had the same symptoms as some of you. Pain
around rib cage. Hurts to even lay on my side.
Feels as if my stomach is going to explode. Worse
when I sit. Pain extends to lower back after sitting for quite some time. Had CAT scan showed nothing. Please help. Ready to scream.

I too have the same problems as you all - Sore left ribs and sometimes sore lower back. I went to the doctor 3 times and had various tests done (barium enema, pelvic ultrasound, urine analysis, etc). Each one came back "normal". So at the suggestion of a co-worker, I went to see a Chiropractor. Turns out the problem is excessive tension in my left iliopsoas muscle that requires some adjustments. I've been to 3 appts, and the pain is getting much better. If you have the same pain, and have had negative tests results with your physician, I suggest you try a chiropractor...Worked for me!!

Forgot to mention in the previous post that my tension of the iliopsoas muscle is caused by my sedentary life style - I sit all day in front of the computer at work, then I go home and sit in front of the computer at home too! I have virtually no abs, and because of this, the iliopsoas muscle is doing the work of my abs, and over time has become very very tense. Hope this helps you all out!

okay, I know we can't all be imagining this pain in the left rib area. I have have chest, abdominal and pelvis CT scans, abdominal and pelvic ultrasounds, IVP and have been "Diagnosed" as TB, lung nodules, Gerd, prominent collecting system, dilated ovarian vein and still I am in great pain. But as the Dr said "good news, there's nothing wrong with you" If there is nothing wrong, why the pain? I have been hurting this way since Oct. I am at the end of my wits.

I have been to many blogs about this condition, I my self am dealing with this pain/gurgling in my upper left abdomen under my rib cage, I have got to tell you it seems like this is an epidemic with no answer, every web page i vist has the same story and I have yet to see a page with someone coming back on after they have taken care of the problem, makes me think that there is no solution, or we could all just be crazy, this is very discouraging, i used to be very active now im at my heaviest weight in my life becasue i have been taking it easy. I dont have insurance so i cant go get checked out but from what i hear that doesnt matter casue there is not a doctor out there with an answer. Goodluck to everyone

I had this problem since October. They did all types of test ranging from CT scans, Xrays, Ultra Sound and every doctor I went to could not give me a reason for the pain. Two weeks ago I had a doctor order an MRI and found that I had a tendon and muscle problem that conects my ribcage to my ab muscle and he said this is very common and accounts for the majority of the pain many patients feel there. The doctor says usually the pain will go away within a year or so, however, the pain could come back from time to time. There is no surgery for it, the only thing he could say that would help is to lose weight, take some anti inflamatories when it flares up.

Everything was the same for me, I had pain, slight swelling under the rib cage when laying down or sitting and slight swelling and pain in the upper left ab area when standing and walking. Usually if everything else has been ruled out then more then likely its an issue with the rib cage tendons and muscle in that area. The doctor also told me that it happens in that area most often simply because the stomach is under the left rib cage and the expanding and contracting of the stomach over time usually causes problems espcially if you have been overweight or you are currently overweight. I hope this sheds light for some of you who are looking for possible answers. Good Luck.

Uhm the iliposoas muscle is in your hip and wouldn't cause pain in your rib cage. You might have weak abs, but you still have them and they won't cause rib cage problems. I think you've been duped about your treatment and the improvement is due to your condition improving on its own or the chiropractor accidentally helped you.Chiropractors medicine has a limited scope of applications--mainly certain types of lower back injury. Research has proven in ineffective for other conditions.

well I might have a solution for you, it seems to have worked for me!!!

After suffering with this pain for a a number of years with no real answers from the doctor. I decided to try a change of diet as I had also read somewhere some of the symptoms I was experiencing could be down to glutten intolerance so I tried a glutten free diet.

After being on it a number of weeks I noticed a vast improvement and since being glutten free or as best as I can be as it is tough to keep to it completely I have not had a reoccurance and do seem to have more energy.

Not saying it is the answer for everyone but it is worth a try as the doctors dont seem to have any other ideas

Sometimes I think this thing is caused by mucles and tendons, but the fact that my lowermost ribs on both sides are tender to the touch, even though the pain constant pain is only on my left side. Could it be viral, like a lower rib/abdominal version of viral costochondritis? There's also slipping rib syndrome, but mine doesn't pop. This is pretty terrible and has been going on for three months now.

If anyone figures this out, please come back here and post your findings.

I'm 23 and for the last 6 months I have had discomfort and pain on the left side of chest, left armpit, and left arm. Had lots of test done on my heart and they say it is fine. I am going to have more tests done that are not heart specific. Feels like a heart attack and it scares the hell out of me. But like all of you, I still have the discomfort and pain with no relief or end in sight. Good luck.

Hi, i have exactly the same symptom as you. When I slightly press the area below my left rib it results in a gurgling burp. My doctor gave me some nepsium tabs but doesnt help much.
The condition starts as soon as I eat something, even drinking water!
Any relief for you?
