"An increased blood level of TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, produced by the pituitary) is the most accurate and earliest abnormal lab finding in hypothyroidism."

Just would like you to know that this is becoming more and more of a false statement. As in my case, and many others, I had symptoms ever since my 21 year old daughter was born. I was first given anti depressants. I had high triglycerides since before my first born. I have had most hypo symptoms these last 20 years. I had an enlarged salivary gland so went into to see y dr. and he ordered a CT Scan which found my enlarged thyroid. I was sent to an endo which ordered a sonogram which found two 5 cm masses. Within a couple of weeks my thyroid was removed along with several other nodules and a lymph node. This thing was huge, so huge my surgeon took a picture of it and gave us a copy! END OF STORY: MY TSH was ALWAYS in normal range. Only if my antibodies would have been tested, which they were finally right before my surgery, it would've been discovered a lot sooner.
