I too have had itchy thumbs where ever the veins run. It at first comes on very painful and then a constant itch just under the skin. My doctor says it is an allergy. If it is an allergy then why does my veins hurt and then itch like crazy. I have migraines for which I take Advil. I have other problems but none are life threatening. Originally I had thought the itch and pain in my thumbs were from Arthritis but when I was at my sister's trailer and I went into the cool but not cold water I had an extreme reaction to the water. It caused excrutiating pain in my throbbing veins that traveled up my arm. After the initial pain wore off( an hour) then the itching which I experienced before but thought it was arthritis.Could you tell me what I and MM have because it sounds exactly like what is happening to me.

I am experiencing the same thing. Especially the itching of the veins in my forearms. It is definitely a subcutanious itch, almost a pain but more leaning towards discomfort. I was thinking that it may have to do with blood pressure, as high blood pressure tends to scrape against arteries and veins, but I'm not certain. I am still very perplexed over this matter.

I have itching off and on in hands/ fingers at the veins and deep under the skin. Some time later it will turn into a deep ache that is not relieved by light rubbing.

My symptoms are due to arthritis. My grandma- who suffers from arthritis- also has these symptoms.

I don't know if that is what you are all looking at, but hope it helps.

Same here. I am a male 67 years old and I am experiencing one vein in particular where my arm connects to my writst at the base of my thumb itching like crazy at frequent intervals. There is not a rash on the surface of my skin and the vein does bvulge more than the vein on the left hand. My BP is like a Yo Yo. It can go from 65/40 to 220/140 in a matter of minutes. I do take medication for BP.

Hi-
I'm Ryan, and I happy to hear that I'm not the only one with this crazy itch in the vein.
I'm a 27 white male, and have had this going on for several years now.
I do not take any drugs or medications and am healthy and fit.
However just recently, the unpleasant itch has tremendously increased to the extent of a constant mild pain that comes at irregular times. It's most noticeable in my left arm (and I am left handed) at the joint of my thumb and wrist. There is no rash or discolor. The vein does seem to swell slightly. I have found that a hot tub/jacuzzi temporarily relieves the itch a little after a short while. I'm curious to know if it has anything to do with blood, perhaps a toxin if not a disease? Not sure if blood type has any contributing factor, but I'm O neg.

It could just be that you have a few Varicose Veins, try looking it up, and see if your symptoms match.:)

The veins in the back of my hands are cursed. Every morning around...8? I get this horrible itchy itchy itchy sensation. I'm not exposed to anything that I could have an allergy to that would only affect me at one time of day.

HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!

WOW! I hadn't realized that this was so common. I am 31 yrs. old and for the past 2 months I have had this unbelievable discomfort in my right arm. In my wrist there is a painful grinding once it flares up from fingers to elbow feels like it's on fire. My veins will bulge with sometimes a burning itch. Right now I'm working with my doctor to figure it out. Sofar x-rays and blood tests showed nothing so now I'm getting an MRI soon and hopefully that will show something. I just didn't know that this was so common and I appreciate reading these comments because now I feel a little bit better knowing that I'm not imagining all this. Thank You.

I really thought that something terrible had infected my body - and it just might have. I have frequent episodes of pain and itchiness on the back of both of my hands but more intense on the right, the fingers of both hands back and front, the section of my arm that is attached to my hand; sometimes my elbow and the back of my right shoulder.
I have high blood pressure that is being controlled by medication.
Do you have any idea of what is going on in my body?

I am a 26 yr old male, very athletic, very healthy and do not take any medications. I have been experiencing very itchy, uncomfortable problems below the surface of the skin on my right arm (upper bicep, where it meet the shoulder) and on my forearm. The itch is intense. Has anyone figured this one out yet?

I am a 43 yo woman and since April I've been exeriencing this a great deal. It has happened before for years but would only happen every once in a while, not enough to worry about. Mine started out with little itching behind my ears then my upper arms..you could not see a rash but sometimes could feel one. Since then my hands have began to itch...so much so that I've had big scabs on my right wrist and my left little finger from scratching non stop..I'd rather feel the pain than the itch. My hands have no bumps and I do get the hot burning sensations on my neck upper arms and my hands. Tonight it's on my inside of my left hand under my thumb. It itches sooo bad...and it seemed like it was itching where my veins are so I started searching and found all of you. I am on medication welbutran and Cymbalta but I have low blood pressure always around 104/82...So mine wouldn't be due to high bp. Please keep updates as will I and maybe we can figure this out.

Wow. I am amazed how common this is. I'm only 15 and healthy. I have arthritis in my left knee but other than that.. My right wrist (Im right handed) itches sooo bad it hurts. And its not the skin that itches it's the veins. The itch also spreads down my arm to my forearm, and elbow crease. I can not figure out why and I can tell the itch is internal because scratching, rubbing, and biting it never helps. If any one knows what might be going on please comment. Thanks <3

I too suffer from itching veins. Like A Dancer said, nothing seems to stop the itch. And believe me, I have tried the biting too. Arthritis does run in my family. I am right handed, and it occurs mostly in my right arm, although it does happen in my other arm as well as my legs.

I am so frustrated with this. I have been going through a lot of crap the past few years. Migraines, dizzy spells and blackouts. I have had every test you can imagine ran, but everything comes back as fine.

I know there is something wrong, but I feel like the doctors just don't believe me about my symptoms.

I am 15. I use the computer daily, and I text almost every day, but not to an excess. Maybe 20-30 texts a day.

I am not a drug addict or alcoholic. I weigh a normal weight for my height. I eat normal food. I do have ADHD, but I only use the meds during the school year.

I really would like to know why my veins itch!!!!!

P.S. This is my mother's screenname, so I don't know what all she has posted on here about.

I just had a thought:

Vaso-constriction - Cortisol contracts mid-size arteries. People with low cortisol (as in advance stages of adrenal fatigue) have low blood pressure and reduced reactivity to other body agents that constrict blood vessels. Cortisol tends to increase blood pressure that is moderated.

Might be a good idea to get your cortisol levels checked.

I know mine have been way off in the past, and I too have this problem. It comes and goes with my treatment for adrenal fatigue.

Also the veins are made of conective tissue, and you could take something to strengthen them like L-proline, which is natural amino acid. I take it every day, and it seems to happen less, but Im not sure if it is the lproline or the adreal support that is helping it.

all this weirdness started when I started having hormonal issues. My thyroid, and Insulin was off at frst. Then I had low blood pressure, and low body temp. No doctor could tell me why, but they seemed to be able to treat it to make me feel better with natural hormones. DHEA, and AMour. A new doctor thought it was my adrenals and put me on Adrenal Dessicated, and it worked much better then the hormones, so I got of the hormones. Now my blood pressure, blood sugar, temps, and hormones eem ok, so this doctor is on to something. My veins feel better as well. So there me be some connection between the cortisol levels and the vein issue.

I also appear to be allergic to something Im eating which he seems to think is causing a lot of this. I go in for allergy testing soon.

I think it is worth checking out.
