Hi. First I felt a numbness to my upper lip for a few days and a slight itch. Then a bump appeared (dark in coloR) the bump went away and now my upper lip is dry and cracked and nothing helps. The only thing that has been easying it lately has been 100% pure virgin olive oil. I have been starting to drink a glass of red wine every night and now I think this is the reason of why my irritation occured. Who knows!!! But olive oil does help it though!

I have been following this thread for 4 months trying to resolve my problem.
I started feeling a minor swelling sensation along my upper lip in January (approximately). Lip feels swollen and I saw little bumps at the edge of the lip. I first noticed them in my 20's and normally could not see them unless I stretched my lip. Now they were visible at close proximity. Thought it was herpes and saw my primary care Physician. She didn't think it was herpes and said use a moisturizer. A month later I went back and saw another doctor in the same practice, he said it was likely a yeast infection and to gargle with salt water. A month later I saw one of the best dermatologists in the Wash DC area and he thought it was an allergic reaction and gave me a topical steroid. This made it worse and more noticable. I am seeing an allergist though I don;t think it is a reaction (too localized and I kept records looking for a trigger like toothpaste etc). I went back and saw the other dermatologist at the same practice and he is absolutely convinced it is fordyce spots but that any swelling or tingling sensation was caused by something else. He said at my age (38-39) the skin can become more oily and that this could cause the fordyce spots to change and become more noticable.
I am still investigating the lip sensation symptoms witht he allergist, dentist etc. I do think the bumps are fordyce spots.

Hi again...I am sending you all this web site as Thomas Smith is helping me. I went to see him this past Saturday in Charleston, SC(my hometown). My brother recommended him to me. I have to tell you, my lip is almost back to normal,THANK GOD, I can smile and it doesn't hurt. After months of this, my lip is amost back to normal. Thomas told me from the feedback that I had to much acid in my body. He is getting my body back in balance. I am following his suggestions and it is working. Today is Monday and I promise you I feel better since this past Sat. Everything is natural that he is asking me to do. You can call him or e-mail him and he can help you. He is a blessing to me. I have found out so much through the biofeedback.

About a month ago I got the ultra dry spot on my upper lip which then peeled leaving a non-swelling, but sensitive red rash about a quarter inch in diameter. The rash then dries out and peels with a fresh rash underneath. It's become a non-stop cycle every two to three days. It started about one week after I started using raw unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar for reflux as suggested by the manufacturer. One objective of the ACV is to ADD ACID to the digestive tract to reduce reflux and it does work. I stopped the AVC about a week ago but the dry spot/rash cycle goes on.

One thing to think about is that if you have open sores on your lips (from angular chelitis or even chapping) you can get a staph infection in those sores. Be sure to ask your docs about it...I had cold sores from exposure to strong sunlight in South Africa, and they got steadily worse, my lips got swollen, cracked, and oozed stuff...this persisted for WEEKS until I finally went home, saw a doc in the US, and was treated for staph. Voila! No more bumps! I do still have the angular chelitis problem, but the best way to control it seems to be putting some carmex in the corners of my mouth before I go to bed at night...seals out the saliva and helps keep bacteria from growing in there. Good luck!

Here's my problem. EVERY time I shave around my lips I get a flare up. My lips get red and swollen and get all these tiny bumps around my lips (almost hard to see). My lips tingle a lot, then after a while start to burn. The area (entire lip top and bottom) becomes soooooo sensitive it's painful. Then the tiny bumps start to produce this yellowish puss that become crusty and even more painful. The itching is unbearable and nothing help relieve the symptoms. I was convinced it was herpes and started to take Vatrex (500mg) daily to suppress the herpes. This has not worked either. Any time I shave around the lip area I still get breakouts. This has been going on for over a year. It's hard to live with. I recently had another flare up and saw my doctor during the crusty stage. The Dr. did a bacterial culture and viral culture to try to determine what was causing it. She thought is was a staph infection and that the staph lived in my nose. She gave some antibiotic topical cream to put on my lips and swab in my nose to try to get rid of the staph. BOTH cultures came back negative - they grew nothing. My doctor still thinks it's a staph infection causing the flare ups but I'm not convinced. I just want some answers and a solution. It hard to live with this crap on my lips constantly - it makes me soooo crabby.

I also have this problem; about two weeks ago, small patches of little bumps developed in the same place on either side of my upper lip. They are starting to grow larger, and I was beginning to get worried... then I read Victoria's post. I have been using Burt's Beeswax lip balm for the past few months, and since this is the only thing I've changed putting on my lips, I suspect it is the cause.

Three months ago I developed a tiny spot on the top left edge of my upper lip. It tingled and I did some research online and assumed it was a cold sore, even though I have never had one before. It didn't go away. Instead, it spread to the other side of my upper lip. Eventually it spread across my whole upper lip in various spots. The spots seep liquid, crust over, peel and start the whole process over again. The whole top edge of my lip burns constantly and the peeling is embarrassing. Also, if I smile, my lip cracks in the center and bleeds. A doctor I know by aquaintance said it didn't look like a typical cold sore, but called in a prescription for Acyclovir for me. I took the pills for a week just as prescribed, but my lip didn't get better. A friend at work brought me some over-the-counter cold sore medicines to try. I tried all three but nothing worked. Today I went to my regular doctor and he said he doesn't look like a cold sore to him either and is referring me to a dermatologist. He thinks it may be an allergic reaction. I told him that the only thing new I had been using was a face cream and Chapstick, which I had stopped using both about a month ago. I just don't know what could be causing this and I don't have the money to be throwing it away to a dermatologist who is just going to say "I don't know what's causing this". I am not normally allergic to anything. HELP! I am so tired and frustrated with having "leper lips".

Many of you describe symptoms I have had in the past few days. Small blisters formed on my upper lip after about 5 days of burning and chapping. The blisters constantly oozed and I would wake up with somewhat crusty lips in the morning. I used all sorts of lip treatments such as various blistex sticks, but to no avail. I went to the doctor who thought it was herpes simplex, but I was not buying it. Somehow I felt it was more bacterial than viral so she prescribed both Zovirax and Bactroban to soothe me. After only 24 hours of using Bactroban, my lips were back to normal! I did not even use the antiviral so it was definitely bacterial. In addition to this cream (which I put on my lips at least once an hour), I used carmex medicated lip balm to keep my lips moisturized, and voila, I am back to normal, with lips the size they used to be and without oozing blisters! Hope this helps some of you!

Since my last post, I started using Dr. Dan's Cortibalm and it seems to be helping. My lips no longer burn or have open sores. I only have a little bit of peeling going on...like a mild case of chapped lips. I am hoping that I will be totally free of this soon, which is good since the dermatologist can't see me for two months!

<quoted text> Did your dry spot every go away? I was readign all these other people and only yours sounds like what I just recently have been experiencing? Super dry spot that you cannot see but just feels a little odd. Doesn't really bother me much, but I just want it gone and rubbing with a washcloth in the shower or adding moiturizers isn't seeming to make it go away. It is my top lip and mostly only on the left part; kind of in two areas. Did anything help you or make it go away.
Thanks,
Danette
Hi Danette. I, too, have the same problem. Did you ever find out what it is or how to treat it? Mine is an extremely dry spot that you can't really see, except for slightly dry looking skin above the lip line. It feels tingly, but there is definitely no sore or anything. It's been like this for about 3-4 weeks now. Just a super dry patch on my upper lip. It doesn't look bad, it's just very annoying!

Thank you!

I have the same symptoms as descibed by most of you. dry, itchy, small bumps on the top of my lips and my lip is swollen..lokks like a got lip enchancement. I did try something different on my lips and it did contain bee's wax. I think that was my culprit. I am not putting lipstick or gloss...just aquaphor...but it doesn't seem to be helping much. I hope to find a cure and what this lip rash is called.

i hadf the same thing for about 2 years and could never figure out y it was doing this but then i went to the derm and had them do an allergy test and i was allergic to milk/ diary once i cut that out of my diet everything went away, if i eat a little dairy at a time (no cheese or straight milk)like products with whey or milk at the very bottom of the lable means it has less than 1% milk fat in the item my mouth gets red but it goes away in about an hour. The derm told me u can have allergic reactions on the most sensitive parts of your skin i wont list them and i also got blood tested for everything and all came back negative but yah allergys can do wierd things.

It all sound like what I've being having for about three weeks. I had no adea there were so many people that have the same kind of problem. Iwas thinking to do to see a doktor but now after reading all this I don't thnink it will solve my problem. One girl has mentioned beewax and it's true I just started using a new lip shimer with beewax. That kind of gives me a hope to be able to solve my problem.

In February after being exposed to pine straw my upper lip area, eyebrow area, and sides of my neck broke out with red burning itching rash that eventually dried up and became dry and scally. It reappears anytime I touch pine straw or drink from plastic bottles. I also have the same condition on top of both hands, this breaks out severely when wearing latex gloves. I use Bitecare Gell a Homeopathic medicine for quick relief and use Mary Kay lip balm and extra emoilment cream for skin re-hydration.

Just a follow up. Allergist found a delayed reaction to something common in older vaccines (Don't have the name handy). I don't think that is it. I am going to get it cultured by a pathologist and if they can't figure it out I am closing the book on this. Also, I tried the pH balancing thing and that had no effect for me.
