NO JASMINE, that is a bad idea, NO ALCOHOL that will not help. k well here's my advice, it sounds like it could be eczema. i used to get eczema all the time and it came out all around my mouth. i hated it, it starts crackin gets red and is really itchy. see if you can get an eczema prescription cream from your doctor, they usually work overnight. if it doesnt work for u, or u noe u dont have eczema, then use a moisturizer for sensitive skin on it (use every morning and night) this should work pretty well. u can also use vaseline on your lips if they are cracking as well. hope this helps, good luck<3

Some of these problems sound like mine. About 5 months ago I got a tingling sensation followed by a red patch and small pus-filled spots. I was pretty sure it was cold sores because it developed after I kissed someone new. However I tried cold sore cream and even pills for herpes but neither had any effect.

I then had a course of oral antibiotics (flucloxacillin) for impetigo which certainly settled it down quite a bit - the pus spots stopped occuring, and the burning/itching subsided as did the pea-sized redness. However the infection did not disappear, so I had a longer course of flucloxacillin, fusidic acid cream, and also subsequently a course of erythromycin pills.

I've just finished the erythromycin but the infection is still there. I feel like I can't kiss anyone for fear of spreading the infection. The doctor said it is no longer infectious but I'm not so sure. I think it might be a persistant bacterial infection which is resistant to conventional antibiotic therapy but I just don't know.

I really want to get rid of this so I'll wait a few days and make yet another appointment with the doctor in the hope he can finally find a solution. Does anyone have any other ideas please?

I work in a dental office, and have seen all kinds of irritants to the mouth. Surprisingly there are more allergic reactions to products the lips and soft oral tissue than you may realize. I am actually allergic to the coloring in the gel in a tube of toothpaste containing a gel. I even broke out on my cheek and around my chin and nose. According to my dermatologist. My latest reaction is described like many of you, as red, puffy, itchy and dry lips. Even tiny small pin head bumps will appear out of no where, and disappear just as quick. I did some research, and concluded that it is probably stress. Accompanied by me licking my lips constantly due to them itching and being dry. Hope this helps anyone out there. Good luck

I have the same problem. About a month ago, I had a death in my family and around that time, I developed a rash across my lips. Tiny, pinhead bumps popped up and were itchy and often burned. The doc gave me fuscidin cream and it went away after a few days. This week, it happened again, only more mild. Now I have about 8 small red bumps on my top lip. I am embarrassed and I miss kissing my boyfriend! Blistex seemed to make it worse, and the fuscidn cream isn't working. What should I do?

Thanks so much...I think I know what my problem is now. I already knew I had rosacea, but I just never knew I could get it on my lip. It only started happening a few months ago..and I only have gotten in in one small area on my upper lip...but it does have the burning sensation, and then after a couple days, it will get a dry patch of skin over it. I believe that is what it is now. thanks

mine started 10yrs ago with a sunburn. Now its recurring. too much sun and too much tomatoe sauce activates it. I thought for yrs I had herpes or some std. What I found out it starts mostly in adulthood. Its hyper-oil glands. Makes sense that people who sweat and get oily more than water sweat have it. Looks very much like sun poisoning rash. Lips then get dry with spots and discoloration. Only I know its there due to no one really notices since I dont have big lips. Started out small but over the yrs both lips have it and it goes right to the edge of my corners but never past the lip edge. I get a slight metal taste, little burning especially from anything cold to drink. I no longer wear lip stick. I dont put anything on it which I found makes it worse no matter what it is. Once you realize its harmless, you wont notice the break outs much. should be some pics on the net some place for you guys to find.

I have been having a similar problem with my lips. About two months ago the corners of my lips (between the top and bottom lips) cracked really bad and I figured it was cold sores. Ever since then, my lips have been unbearably chapped, but when my lips get chapped they don't crack and bleed, but rather there is a thin line right where the top of my upper lip meets the skin. It looks like Im wearing lip liner because its a darker red line at the top of my lip (and I notice the rest of my upper lip is whiter than my bottom lip). After trying all kinds of moisturizers it hasn't gone away. If I go more than a day without putting on some Carmex or Blistex, a cold sore is almost certain to develop. I bought some 1% hydrocortisone cream yesterday and will have to see how that works out... but other than that I guess I will have to go see a derma to see what is going on.

I keep looking up topics that describe my lip problem and this section seems to have the most stories similar to mine. I get every few weeks on the bow shaped part of my upper lips a Super Dry patch. You can't see it but I can feel it. The only ways I can describe it is if someone took clear fingernail polish and rubbed it across that small area and you try EVERYTHING to get moisture to it and it can't penetrate the area. It also burns slightly and is very uncomfortable. I'm trying everything. Arbonne Lip Saver, Aveda Lip Saver, Abreva, Lansinol (breast feeding ointment) Neosporin and nothing helps. What's frustrating is that NO ONE can see it to believe me how uncomfortable it is. If I don't have any ointment on it at all it feels like a slug shriveling up when salt is poured on it. I would loose my mind after 2 minutes if I couldn't put anything on it. ANYONE ---- Please help. Could this be a cold sore that never actually POPS out!??
Did your dry spot every go away? I was readign all these other people and only yours sounds like what I just recently have been experiencing? Super dry spot that you cannot see but just feels a little odd. Doesn't really bother me much, but I just want it gone and rubbing with a washcloth in the shower or adding moiturizers isn't seeming to make it go away. It is my top lip and mostly only on the left part; kind of in two areas. Did anything help you or make it go away.

Thanks,

my condition may be similar to some of yours. i first had an outbreak of a bunch of tiny pimple-looking bumps a few days after trying a new chapstick ( i usually use blistex). i ignored them and stopped using chapstick, and they went away in about two weeks.

then i had another similar reaction to i think vaseline, but at the time i thought it was a lipstick. after a few days, my lips broke out in tiny pimples again. i found that not putting anything on them at all would make them go away.

thinking that the previous reaction was to a lipstick, i put vaseline on my lips again to heal chapped lips. i got another reaction. however, i didnt panic because i remembered i could just not put anything on them and it would go away--- HOWEVER i went like 2 weeks without putting anything on them and they chapped horribly and new pimples started showing up. i think one even had a white head, even though ive NEVER had a cold sore.

now its a month later and i have no pimples but instead my lips are swollen with dark red patches. i have a dermatologist appt tomorrow, and i hope they know what this is. it has made me so depressed and unhappy, and i feel so ugly, and im normally a pretty and confident girl. ugggh!!

Hey Julie I used to live right over the bridge in Portland. Small world....I had just emailed the comment prior to yours this morning and was just checking to see if anyone had responded. My issue is a little bit different than yours, but hope it goes away soon. Best of luck in getting rid of it.

I have the same thing...went to a dermatologist and he gave me ATOPICLAIR, it has helped. He said it is to put moisture back into the skin. I also use TRIAMCINOLONE ACETONIDE CREAM USP,0.1% for the itching. I have been trying things, after doing a lot of research. I find when I drink beer I will start itching and my lip gets very red. I am also trying to stop drinking coffee. I take allergy shots, as I am allergic to most everything. I am 61, and my problems started a few years ago. I think it is due to all the pestisides, cleaners, exhaust fumes, etc, etc. Good luck, I keep hoping I will find the answers. I am going to have a patch test done also.

I have been gettign very similar symptoms to lots of peopel here. I have very sensitive skin naturally and am allergic to alot of things. I was especialyl sensitive to lanolin and perfume which used ot mak emy lips very sore, weepy, dry and horrible. When I cut out these items from my cosmetics it all went away and I had great lips for ages. Recently though, the same things have been comking back. I get tiny red dot like spots on my lips. Its quite bizarre, you can feel them with your finger and they feel rough and dry - like sand in paint or soemthing. They are so uncofortable - i only use vaseline on my lips now and it still does it. leaving them dry doesn thelp, and putting on vaseline doesnt make any difference either. My doctor thinks Im overreacting and its just stress - but i only get stressed when this thing happens! i can never kiss my boyfriend now and it makes me really depressed and stressed. I feel like I cant go out, my lips just look and feel awful. Ive tried everything, any advice?

So many of these posts sound similar to what i am going through. Except i look like bozo the clown! I have a history of eczema, and noticed my lips would chap if i made out with my boyfriend. But this year, i got sunburned on my lips, and ever since then, i have a rash around my lips that flares up time to time. It itches and is so embarrassing! I havent gone to the docs, because it flares up then goes away before i can go in. But now i have dark skin patches around my lips! Even though no one notices it, i know its there and i always think people are staring at it. I've tried cortaid and it helps with the itching, but i still look like bozo. Anyone else depressed like me?:)

It sounds like herpes. which is a very common viral infection that most people get at some point or another. Avoid touching it to keep it from spreading and take care of yourself so it doesn't recur as often (it tends to pop up when you're run down or sick, hence the common name cold sore)

I too have a dry patch on my upper lip. I noticed it when I first felt like I was coming down with a cold. It started out like tiny bumps about the size of the head of a pin. It started on the left side then spread to the middle. Now it just looks like a dry patch of skin. It never blistered or filled with pus....it's just dry. What IS THIS?

Hi again...I am sending you all this web site as Thomas Smith is helping me. I went to see him this past Saturday in Charleston, SC(my hometown). My brother recommended him to me. I have to tell you, my lip is almost back to normal,THANK GOD, I can smile and it doesn't hurt. After months of this, my lip is amost back to normal. Thomas told me from the feedback that I had to much acid in my body. He is getting my body back in balance. I am following his suggestions and it is working. Today is Monday and I promise you I feel better since this past Sat. Everything is natural that he is asking me to do. You can call him or e-mail him and he can help you. He is a blessing to me. I have found out so much through the biofeedback.

I seem to have had every single type of reaction possible and now i just woke up and I HAVE THE SAME ONE AS HIM. There is a deep dark red line across the middle of my bottom lip, and other than that my lips seem to be fine. All i've been using lately was aquaphor, which is basically brand name vaseline, which the dermatologist recommended too! I dont know what to do! Does anyone know what this is????????

Thank God I found this forum. I have a rash on my upper lips. Its in the form of very many small pimples - really small, in clusters here and there. They are the colour of my lips and one really has to be observant to notice them. No pain. I first saw them about six months ago, and they then disappeared without any intervention. I concluded it must have been an allergy to something. But I have now had them for the past two months and they don't seem set to remain. I contacted a doctor yesterday and he told me it is oral herpes. I have read up on this, and I am not convinced by his diagnosis, because the duration and characteristics of my rash differ from those of oral herpes. Any ideas? Anybody? Please help
