I have an odd rash on my upper lip. I've had it for four years now (ever since the eighth grade). The rash started when I had a cold sore on the corner of my lip. I used an over-the-counter medication called Abreva. I applied it, and it got very red and inflamed until the inflamation covered my whole upper lip.

I then discontinued use. Thereafter, I have a rash. It was not as deep red as the original inflamation, but it is very painful and still covers my whole lip. It is a light red, and does not behave like acne. It puffs up in individual blisters about two millimeters diameter and extend about a half a millimeter from my lip. These blisters pop and bleed. It gets very dry after I get out of the shower, or when I wake up in the morning. It gets dry, and excretes pus, and tends to flake round platelets of skin.

I see a pattern after the last four years. It gets very bad and very red and blisters a lot. Then it hits a dormant period in which it turns pink and kind of dry. I apply lotion to it every day; Aveno moisturizing lotion. I've tried going long periods of time without it, but it doesn't help. I've also been on antibiotics. At first, I started out with Triple Antibiotic ointment, then Bactroban, and several other cremes that did less than help. I also wash it every shower with Aveno moisurizing soap. I've tried many other moisturizers and soaps, and Aveno works the best and feels the best.

I have a dermatology appointment here in a little while, and there I will pay out the ass for another buttload of cremes and useless crap...I'm hoping some sort of pill or shot which I've not had yet.

So, that's my ailment. Do you guys have any suggestions or ideas that I can take with me to the Dermatologist? I know she really tries and knows best, but lately, nothing's been working.

QUOTE who="Dan Paquette" Dan, Your problem sounds the very same as mine. I just came from the Emergercy Room but the Dr.. said try Lanacane . Do you have a solution yet? One web site said my dental implants could cause lip pain. Help!

i've had the same porblems maybe you should try putting alcohol on it. There maybe a burning sensation after but it will help disinfect the area and dry it up and it wil go away much faster. plus there isnt any irritant amongst the skin but if you do find any then you should immediately consult a doctor.

I myself about a week ago notice two very small red patches on my upper lip, one on the right and left side. I freaked out and thought it was herpes, but it hasn't pussed up. They are like tiny dry patches that have now spread to the rest of the top lip and bottom lip. It hurts, itches and makes me look like I had lip injections - I go to the dermatologist tomorrow, so I will keep you posted.

About a week ago I noticed a small patch of small bumps on my upper lip, now the small tiny bumps have spread to both upper and lower lips and threaten to go beyond the borders of the lips. They do not itch but there is a slight throbbing sensation. I have looked at cheilitis and fordyce photos but they don't look like what I have. I don't think it's an alergic reaction because I can't think of anything new that I've used or eaten lately. Any clue? Please help!

Hello girls, it is lipstick or lipbalm with beeswax as an ingrediant. Every time I try again to use a product with beeswax I get the lip rash. Also there is some other ingrediant that plumps up the lips and that causes reactions as well. Try aloe vera fresh from the plant to soothe the lip skin. Do not use alchohol.

i agree with Victoria. everytime after drinking alcohol, the next morning my lips develop rash and they look very dry. vaseline helps the rash to go away. stay away from gloss, lipstick and alcohol

I too have a dry patch on my upper lip. I noticed it when I first felt like I was coming down with a cold. It started out like tiny bumps about the size of the head of a pin. It started on the left side then spread to the middle. Now it just looks like a dry patch of skin. It never blistered or filled with pus....it's just dry. What IS THIS?

I have had a rash on my upper lip on and off for 6 months. It got much worse the last month and think it mite be caused by me having braces. I now have a dark red ring around my mouth. I have gone to 3 doctors and tried the following, mometasone furoate, cutivate, centany, locoid lipocream, kuric, to no avail. I’m ready to give up I can’t go the rest of my life like this.

this sounds very much like what i have going on with my chin. about 4 months ago i got a ring worm just below my jaw line on my chin. i put an OTC cream on it, and it seemed to disappear. 2 weeks later i noticed my skin was dry there and it seemed to be a bit swollen. now it has spread to cover virtually my whole chin! i've tryed more OTC cream, moisterizers, neosporin, but nothing seems to work... any suggestions?

roscaea
mine started 10yrs ago with a sunburn. Now its recurring. too much sun and too much tomatoe sauce activates it. I thought for yrs I had herpes or some std. What I found out it starts mostly in adulthood. Its hyper-oil glands. Makes sense that people who sweat and get oily more than water sweat have it. Looks very much like sun poisoning rash. Lips then get dry with spots and discoloration. Only I know its there due to no one really notices since I dont have big lips. Started out small but over the yrs both lips have it and it goes right to the edge of my corners but never past the lip edge. I get a slight metal taste, little burning especially from anything cold to drink. I no longer wear lip stick. I dont put anything on it which I found makes it worse no matter what it is. Once you realize its harmless, you wont notice the break outs much. should be some pics on the net some place for you guys to find.

I keep looking up topics that describe my lip problem and this section seems to have the most stories similar to mine. I get every few weeks on the bow shaped part of my upper lips a Super Dry patch. You can't see it but I can feel it. The only ways I can describe it is if someone took clear fingernail polish and rubbed it across that small area and you try EVERYTHING to get moisture to it and it can't penetrate the area. It also burns slightly and is very uncomfortable. I'm trying everything. Arbonne Lip Saver, Aveda Lip Saver, Abreva, Lansinol (breast feeding ointment) Neosporin and nothing helps. What's frustrating is that NO ONE can see it to believe me how uncomfortable it is. If I don't have any ointment on it at all it feels like a slug shriveling up when salt is poured on it. I would loose my mind after 2 minutes if I couldn't put anything on it. ANYONE ---- Please help. Could this be a cold sore that never actually POPS out!??
