When i was first hired i was told what a great place kool smiles was and the Doctor was very good, one who read verses of the holy bible every morning before the first patient. Well it was nothing like that at all! I couldn't believe how they tortured the children there, with the papoose board, a head holder, plus 2 assistants using all their weight to hold the child down when he didn't seem fearful until he was wrapped and restrained like a mental patient. The doctor (Dr. Lopes) kept yelling at the children with remarks like Boy or Girl (instead of their name)"You don't tell me what to do, I tell you what to do!" He wouldn't make sure the patient was numb or wait until the nitrous had time to kick in, just start drilling sometime cutting their cheek or lip in the process, I responded "Are you sure he or she is numb!. The child would flop like a fish and turn its head side to side and the doctor would not STOP! I was having an anxiety attack as this was going on, tears where running down my face, i'm a mother of infant twins and it really hurt me like i could feel their pain and anquish. I later complained to the Office Manager but she didn't care, i even warned mothers of fathers not to come back, file a complaint, or if the child seemed already fearful to go to a dentist who does hospital sedation because of the trauma it will bring. I tried to do what i could even get it on camera but they would not let me assist anymore and sent me to hygiene to take xrays instead. I was later fired for complaints of cross-contamination and chairs and equiptment not being wiped down in between patients especially with the swine fle going around, so i refused to work in that environment with fear of bringing home germs to my infants and requested that other staff be retrained. In my 11 years experience superior to their mostly just out of school externs or 1 or 2 years experience who work there as assistants are such incompetent and ignorant, uncaring creatures who should not even be let out on the field without real training.
I hope everyone realizes that Kool Smiles isn't going to last very long doing this to our kids....God's children....Jesus says
Matthew chapter 18 verse 3-9
"Assurdely, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven."
"Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."
"Whoever receives one little child like this in my name receives me"
"But whoever misleads one of these little ones who believes in me, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea."
Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!
Matthew chapter 18 verse 10, 11 "Take Heed that you do not despise one of these little one's, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven."
"For the son of Man has come to save which was lost."

Funny! All of you incompetent employees who are terminated say Kool Smiles will not last long. Do you not know how much we are growing? Kool Smiles strives to train all employees in the best to their ability problem is you are probably not trainable. With that many years of experience you have how can you get terminated from a job for cross contamination. Good luck to you go find another job we all know it wont pay you what Kool Smiles did.

Hey El Paso employee - its been a while, are you still there. I left on my own accord. I was not fired I left that god forsaken place. I loved many of my fellow employees but I could not in good conscience work for a place that had NO idea of state standards for cleanliness in the offices, treated their employees with little to no respect and they were the ones working their asses off to make them money and ask the dentists to preform as much work on each patient at each visit as they could. Let me put it this way - if a dentist was able to put sealants on every teeth in the mouth it was called a gold mine....need I say more? Never take your child there - there are better places that take state insurance. Do you homework and go there first!

In reference to the above comment I am an experienced Pedi Nurse who also happens to be the mother of a 2 year old cancer survivor with autism....the unprofessionalism, discourtesy, lack of concern for patient needs, & refusal to honor a Dr.'s order (WHICH IS ILLEGAL) were SOOOOO unsettling upon attempting to take my daughter for a visit that THANK GOD we never made it in the back for examination before I informed them NO THANK YOU WE WILL BE LEAVING! This situation was horrendous enough I recieved a call from the VP of quality...who reports directly to the CEO supposedly...to the person who wrote the comment Im responding to...you sound like an uneducated individual who *OBVIOUSLY* gets paid well by Kool Smiles...otherwise such a statement as the one made above would NOT have been justified in ANY other way...but what YOU MAKE at Kool Smiles does NOT have ANY relevance to this discussion...and perhaps if you were literate enough to read things fully youd realize...thats NOT what she said. In the name of representing myself well I have been polite...however...I feel the need to respectfully tell you to SUCK IT sir or madam. Have a GREAT day at KOOOOOOL SMILES and may God forgive you for your ignorance.

Ok first of just because you worked in an awful office doesnít make all KOOl SMILES bad.. Iím sorry I have been a DA for over 7 yrs and I love my job I have been with Kool Smiles for over 3 yrs and I wouldnít change a thing.. You must not be that great of a DA if you cant understand the reason f of why we do the things we do there We are trying to take care of these children we need not to blame Kool Smiles we need to blame the parents who arenít brushing or taking care of their children dental hygiene.. Sorry but when I see a 2 yr old with so much decay that almost every tooth in their mouth has to have a crown on them or be extracted because they cant be saved.. The reason for the papoose is to make sure the child doesnít hurt themselves Doctor or the Assistant .. The parents know what is going on and if they donít the only one to blame is the assistant if you cant not explain to the parent everything that is going to happen then that on you .Plus parents are allowed back in the rooms .Oh wait lets blame the Doctors though...Oh and what about the parents who know their kids mouth is jacked up let their child go on for months then bring them in for an emergency oh wait lets not take our children to Kool Smile better yet lets go to another Doctor who wont do nothing because they donít work on children.. Iím sick of people saying Kool Smiles is so bad .. Whatever.. I love my job my staff and all of my Doctors .. Like I said you must no be that great of DA!!

I worked in a office for almost a year during which time we went through more than half of our staff being fired for quality of care reasons. I thought we were working to improve the staff so we could properly care for our patients only to find that we were on of the lowest paying dental clinics in the area. Our new assistants quickly changed from wanting to help the kids to just being plain angry and mean to them. Then I would have to try and make things better only to be reprimanded for pointing out several different areas in which we failed to provide quality care. If you want to go to a place that values its employees, patients, parents and community look elsewhere. Kool Smiles is raking in major profits and isn't interested in sharing any of that with the ones doing the work.

I agree... From experience it seems that there is a pattern with the people complaining about Koolsmiles....these complaining employees are incompetent... I think Koolsmiles is a great place to work...I see it all the time... Da's hygienist and doctors... That come through they can't hang so they complain... Placing a child in Palouse is not torture it is for their safety ... But actually in the office I work in we very seldom use it...

What is your position with Kool Smiles? Are you a dentist? Are you working for them now?

I have a friend that has been a dental assistant in Arkansas for 16 years. I won't say what KS office she works at. She has all of her certifications and registrations. She worked for 15 of those years in one dental clinic, until her old dentist retired. She took a job at Kool Smiles last year. She says Kool Smiles is not up on Texas Dental regulations at all. Plus she says the assistants don't make much (10-12 hr usually) while the Dentists and office staff make the bigger money. She is lucky to work 32 hrs a week, yet they threatened to fire her is she took another job. To the posters that say the Da's must be incompetent since they complained, bull. Sounds like they are the only ones who care enough to blow the whistle.

It's not what I get paid that matters it's what I do on a day to day basis that makes a differance in a childs life. I work with caring and compassionate people who truly care.

Your response to the complaints made have absolutly noting to do with the quality of work performed by kool smiles (children with jacked up teeth) is not reason enough for DA to treat patients the way they do, Putting the blame on the parents for the poor performance of the kool smiles staff is Idiotic........

I am a hygienist at Kool Smiles. The other hygienist and I are doing a great job of making the patients feel at home. Our office does serve the underprivileged but I want my patients to feel as tho they r getting five star treatment. I realize that this company is very fast paced, but I feel like patient safety and comfort is not compromised at the office I work at, at all. I realize how it can be a high burn out rate, but it can also be rewarding.

I took my 4 year old daughter to Kool Smiles 2 days ago and I am never going back! I wish I would have found these posts before I went because I certainly would have cancelled the appointment. They forced me to give them permission to use the papoose board even though I do NOT want it used on my child. They had already cancelled the appointment the day before and my daughter was so upset because she was excited to go get her teeth cleaned. Then when they did her x-rays the woman was very rough with her and left a thumb print on her cheek where she was forcing her mouth closed because the thing was too big to fit in her mouth. She has one cavity and I have made an appointment with a pediatric dentist that knows how to care for small children because there is no way in hell they are strapping my kid down and torturing her. I just hope it doesnt take me forever to get her records from Kool Smiles!

I have been to Kool Smiles with my grandchildren numerous times and have been surprised at how prompt they usually are. I also feel that they are kind and professional in their treatment of the children. One of my granddaughters was terrified when she went in for the first time, but came out smiling. My grandson has had extensive work done since the age of 3 and has never cried or been afraid to go. I did give permission for use of the papoose board, if necessary, but it was not necessary, so it wasn't used. The staff always answers all my questions before treating one of the children, and, even though they discourage parents from going in with their children, they told me I could if I really felt I needed to. There is a window in the waiting room where parents can look into one of the treatment areas. My conclusion, based on my experience and the reviews I read here, is that all Kool Smiles offices are not created equal.
