27 March 2012 – Munich, Germany – A customizable ”skin” intended to improve therapeutic compliance among obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients is an innovation being introduced by ResMed Germany, Inc. as a feature of its S9 sleep therapy system.
In collaboration with San Diego-based, device personalization experts Skinit, ResMed has launched an on-demand S9 personalization portal that allows patients to change the cover design of their S9 system using Skinit’s convenient online service.
The skins designed for the S9 are made from a durable vinyl coating that is easy to apply and remove. Patients can either choose a skin from one of the hundreds of ready-made designs available online or create a specific design for a completely individualized look.
“Our research shows that if you make therapy more appealing and personal, then patients are motivated to use it more frequently,” stated Holger Woehrle, medical director, Europe for ResMed.“Skinit gets patients thinking about their therapy, customizing it, and making it a part of their lives. Therapy adherence is crucial for achieving positive patient outcomes and we believe this can further improve it.”
Improving compliance through personalization
Though a study published earlier this year has already shown an increase in average daily therapy use by 30 min or more with the ResMed S9 series, the company strives to further improve patients’ adoption and use of therapy. Skinit is just one of several elements in a series of efforts to drive adherence. ResMed has introduced masks specifically designed to fit women and children and has launched a number of educational tools for patients.
“Compliance with therapy is essential for sleep apnea patients to experience improvements in quality of life. We believe our efforts to enable users to personalize therapy are a crucial step in support of compliance,” said Frank-Peter Klein, ResMed’s vice president of the sleep strategic business unit, Europe.
