As an audiologist and former sign language interpreter, I was pleased to be able to help my child learn to express himself this way. I started signing with my son when he was about 9-10 months old, and he learned very quickly things like 'More''please' and specific objects like book, apple, cracker. We always used our voices at the same time, and he developed speech/language milestones within normal limits. The more spoken language he developed, the less he signed. When parents ask me about using signs with their infants, I advise them to think of a few things that are important for everyday communication, and have common gestures all family members can use consistently to help with getting through the day.
