Something here smells fishy.

The City funds a program to help unemployed get back to work - OK.

The program is aimed at minorities - not surprising.

The City funds a program to help graduates of their back to work program to buy their own truck to use on construction sites -$15K against a $60K purchase? Not so sure of that.

The City talks of using these graduates as part of the construction of the Central Corridor Light Rail Project and Union Depot - these are temporary projects and are not guaranteed that they will even be funded.

What happens if the Central Corridor and/or the Union Depot does not get fully funded? These people now have a huge debt with their shiny new small trucks that are worthless when it comes to real construction projects.

Since the graduates are minorities, they are part of a special protected class. Can they sue Coleman, Frias, Carter, and Trasvina for enticing them into taking on debt they can no longer manage?

On Friday, he'll take the road test for his Class B commercial driver's license, which would allow him to drive dump trucks, delivery trucks, lumber trucks and any other kind of truck under 13 tons. That would set him on a path toward a public works job with the city of St. Paul or another municipality, or finding employment with a contractor on the Central Corridor light-rail transit project.

LOL! To get a Public works job in St Paul, your mother/brother/or the guy thats ban ging your mother better work there 1st!

The guy better be BLACK if he wants a Job on the Rail,( Help Wanted- White Males Need NOT Apply!)

I have yet to see a Dump truck that Hauls 13 tons or less on the rail, Most are Quads or Quints that haul 16- 19 ton and there is no way this guy is gong to get a job driving a $180k dump truck with out experience!

This is one more Boondoggle program tied to the Rail!

They should allow anybody to sign up for this program, race should not be an issue here. The economy is bad, everybody is hurting!I have been unemployed since September of 2009 and still unable to find a job. I am fighting against hundreds or thousnds of other people out there. If I new about this great opportunity I would of signed up for it. But reading some of these comments I would not be qualified because I am white male! That sound very prediace and it should be against the law! I will be very concern when unemployment runs out in a couple of weeks. How I am going to pay the bills, put food on the table and will I have a place to stay. They need to change the laws and make everybody equal. It's all about Politics, money and what race you are!

Did you know the Teamsters have an apprentice program? Some of the best training in the state. If you want to work construction. They should be pretty easy to find. They were for me and I went to there program and got a great job with support.

I am unemployed since last year and the government seems to just take care of new immigrants. This guy who makes 70K took a spot in the program from someone who could use it. Why don't the government open a program just for the unemployed. It is tough enough that we're competing with thousands of people and now we have to compete with the ones that has job too. If the economy was great then I can understand but come on government help your people that have been here for years too and that helped build this place. What's even sadder is that a lot of these immigrants qualify for food stamps, reduce or free rent and health insurance.

I believe the fellow with the $70,000 per year job had lost that job 3 years ago and has not worked since.

Tractors that pull side dump or bellydump trailers can be found on the market in the price range of $20,000. A truck at the press conference was said to have cost just $10,000 and the owner (a minority) is in his 4th year operating it in construction.
Dump trucks (Quads,Quints or Tri's) are a much higher investment than tractors and would be more difficult for an entry level driver to purchase. The license and operation for the dump truck is simpler for an entry level driver, the cost of purchase is generally higher.
