Pain coming from compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve is called sciatica.

Well, if there were any standards for chiropractic care or any best practices that chiropractors follow, maybe one could consider seeing a chiropractor.
However, most chiropractors use unfounded and bizarre procedures like nucca, activator, sot, ak, and network. Most chiropractors still claim that "chiropractic subluxations" cause illness and disease. They are a bizarre bunch, very few can be trusted. See a board certified physiatrist before seeing a chiropractor or orthopod for you neck or back problems. |

he he Who else but a failed chiropractor (mrwisdom) is better to give sound advice! What a fraud. |

I believe strongly that 90%...if not more of all back surgeries are useless and uncalled for in the majority of cases. 90% + are usually failed procedures which leave the patient in a worse state than when they first had any form of lower back symptoms or sciatica; chronic or otherwise. I have seen numerous cases of failed back surgeries. It seems that when a patient has an ongoing back problem, unfortunately many are uninformed and believe anything their M.D. tells them. The only reason for any form of back surgery would be in hopes of resolving paralysis of some form when all other roads of treatment have proven to be unsuccessful. Actually, for chronic sciatica I would recommend SOT from a chiropractor first.

Ignorance exemplified. SOT? Please link your evidence. Until then stop your baloney. |

...in "HOPES of resolving"....ie continuing research and current surgical trials etc........it's really not necessary to dog every comment here. Also SOT has relieved my sciatica, and my past patients before I retired. We both know that there is no proof or evidence for ANY chiropractic technique.Cut the crap. If someone gets any relief that's good enough for me, personally. Wisdom....you should lighten up....it' s not all black all the time. |

I asked this question to my chiropractic clinic in Seattle a couple years back and I was told that if you have a reputable chiropractic that's been around for some time then they would be the best choice. http://www.seattleactivewellness.com

Sciatica is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve most often by the piriformus as it passes between superior gamellus. As an LMT who has worked many years in a chiropractic office i would like to offer the following advice.
1.) Surgery is expensive and should only be a last resort. Surgery is extremely invasive and can never be undone. Chiropractic medicine along with many other alternate forms of health and wellness are both cost affordable and non invasive. This means even if you dont have results that you have spent very little money and have done nothing that is going to haunt you for the rest of your life. 2.) As a Massage therapist i regularly have clients that come to me for chronic sciatica. These patients see me for an hour a few times a month depending on the severity of their symptoms and have found that i can provide them relief for their pain. This is almost always accompanied by regular chiropractic visits as well. Chiropractic care is a safe, noninvasive and an extremely affordable health and wellness measure to take for yourself. 3.) Back surgery is going to run you more than $10,000 on average with only a 33% chance of providing relief. That leaves a 66% chance that you will spend $10,000+ for either no benefit at all, or actually increasing the severity of your pain.(these numbers are being generous btw) The average cost of a chiropractor is $65 per visit, if we round that up to $100 per visit that means you would have to see the chiropractor 100 times before meeting the minimum costs for back surgery. 4.) Always start with the least invasive, least drastic forms of healthcare. Surgery should always be a last resort after you have tried all other viable avenues to stop your pain |

Tyler, NO "chiropractic" is supported by any legitimate evidence. The most commonly used "chiropractic" techniques are activator, gonstead, nucca, ak pro adjuster etc.
While mild generic spinal manipulation has been shown helpful for uncomplicated NON radiculopathic low back pain, "chiropractic" techniques have NOT. See a board certified physiatrist for your musculoskeletal problems. They are medical doctors who are expertly trained in musculoskeletal conditions and who have all the treatment modalities at their disposal. |
