Clearing the air
If your asthma symptoms have shown improvement over the past few months, does this mean that your asthma is finally clearing up? HAVE you heard that a person can 'grow out' of asthma? Or that eating certain foods may either worsen asthma or lead to improvement? As with many other diseases, there are plenty of myths, rumours, and old wives' tales ...

Although this article is well intentioned I feel it only tells part of the story.
Historical records actually show that people with asthma rarely, if ever, died from the condition. In fact the number of deaths only increased from single figures when modern medication was made available in the 1920's.
The real cause of asthma firstly is genetic. If someone is genetically predisposed to have asthma then they will suffer symptoms when there is a depletion of carbon dioxide reserves held in their lungs. The level should be 6.4% but will depend on the extent of correct breathing together with how much carbon dioxide we produce by muscle use. It is quite common for a child to lose asthma symptoms when moving to a school where more activity is encouraged, so the myth we can 'grow out of asthma' is perpetuated. Of course as people get older and become less active then asthma may well return. The secret is to learn how to breathe at normal rates so carbon dioxide levels are maintained at optimum levels.
Diet also DOES affect breathing if too many high protein foods, too much caffeine or too much alchol, for instance is consumed. But of at least equal importance is the amount of food we eat. When we feel full we breathe deeper, taking in too much oxygen and exhaling too much carbon dioxide.
This is a common reason for asthma.
I would like everyone, with or without health issues, to undertake a BUTEYKO BREATHING COURSE. I believe this would lead to the prevention of so many of the modern illnesses we witness today
